I think Thailand should enter into the 21st century, they are a country where a proportion of their money comes from tourists and expats. The university’s and schools are filled with kids that speak a variety of different languages, yet nothing changes. I don't know about anyone else’s experience and it’s not really necessary to me as I can conduct myself in Thai, but every year I process my visa and the only thing the immigration officer says is “sen .. here .. here”. Why are there not competent foreign language speakers working in key positions, at very least there should be a phone line where there is a Russian speaking Thai, for example. Why is there not a government department, staffed by uni graduates who are proficient in other languages who can create and maintain websites, create coherent forms that both Thai and westerners can understand. How many times do you complete a form with the assistance of your wife and the clerk takes it and says “no, no, no” and rewrites it. Even Thai people don’t have a clue what info needs to go where. Like you say, how can retirees from European countries all be expected to speak English to complete critical financial forms, what about if that applicant ended up over paying 100s of USD because of his inability and the inability of the Thai government to communicate with him? This isn’t a rant that Thai government department should all speak English, it’s why don’t they use their human resources available to them and improve their services? Instead it’s the usual inherent laziness and nepotism.

Wow! That is interesting. I have never heard from any other teacher that they have needed to show a tax receipt, but it does show that payment of tax could easily be demanded at visa application. When you are a teacher, the schools and the directors are known to the immigration bosses, some schools send an assistant to make sure there are no hitches when applying for an extension, it seems there is a certain amount of leeway. Anyway, let's all wait and see. I will use an agent to process my next visa, so I presume I will have a years grace to assess the situation.

If the official says there is nothing that could be done, you might be quite within your right to put up a camera on your land looking into his window or over his property (even a dummy camera) but it seems a bit antagonistic, how about a solar floodlight pointing level with his camera. Perhaps he just doesnt realize what he's doing. You can just put up a wall, some trees or even a sheet of plywood on the wall, blocking the cameras field of view. You could use a laser, but in practice, it's quite difficult to keep it trained upon a camera sensor. Thais dont seem to be too clued up on CCTV, they often just use mains powered wifi cameras, in which case it would be easy to use a deauth attack to continually take the camera offline. If you search YouTube, it won't be long before you come up with a cheap method to solve your problem.

My local immigration asked for a tax receipt when renewing extensions to teachers, the first year of enforcement they asked, some schools are supposed to file your tax that they deduct but never produce a receipt or TIN, the school I worked at, you were supposed to file your own, but no one ever did - when applicants didn't have the receipts, it was a "mai bpen rai, next year na" - the following year, they had given up asking for them. The immigration department are just RTP, they have no interest in enforcing all laws, only ones that they can profit from - maybe we will see an increase in visa applicants using agents if it is enforced.

I spent a few days watching YouTube videos and deciding upon mine based upon budget, but you may find that a fifine mic in your price range may be a better bet. You might even be better with a USB mic, straight into your laptop, and using a software mixer - then polishing the recording with audacity

Just to let you know my budget teaching setup .. FYI, I just wanted a mic that I could use with a mixer, so wanted an XLR rather than a USB mic and I ended up with a Maono PD100 Podcasting mic, I think it's more than OK. They have other mics that may suit, but the PD100 suited my budget. I use a fifine low profile mic stand, this isnt too important to you - and I bought a fifine ampligame, this is probably the weakest link, probably generates a bit of hiss but I needed something to manage the headphone volume manually when moving between different students and times of the day. Thai apartments are pretty bad for sound recording, I have foam panels in my room which I made, and a woolen rug - but quality isnt so important to me - I have heard of people who do voiceovers using duvets or up ending mattresses - or both and making a little makeshift recording booth, Software - always audacity https://www.audacityteam.org I think they had a recent big update - you can mix down your vocals there, by tweaking the levels and adding compression. Really i'm happy with the mic and would recommend it for a little over 1000B. Comes with a desk stand too.

Like many others, I have had bikes in the 500K+ region - I know that “proud new bike” feeling, it’s awesome, you want to take steps to protect your new possession. However, I never really had an issue - from what I see on Thai TV, most thieves just pick it up and throw it in a truck. No lock or alarm is going to help. Just get good insurance. Ironically, we have an old kickstart dream, with a sidecar, the dream cost 10K. We went to big c and instead of checking into the parking lot, left it outside a next to a food stall. On return, a screwdriver was jammed in the key and the steering lock broken in a way that we couldn’t move it. The woman said some kids were sitting on the sidecar, while waiting for food, chatting away, she didn’t think anything was strange at all. Strange that something worth so little was worth stealing.

I don’t remember the need to train my cat in such a manner. We now have non-contact ethical sanctuaries, filled with rescued animals - rescued from where? Elephants were stopped being used in logging since 1984, so now elephants are produced to be dragged around the villages peddling trinkets or perform tricks at fairs aimed at the local market. They are offered as rescue animals, I hear it costs 1M THB from an owner, others may be temporarily rescued by renting them. These ethical sanctuaries are money making enterprises. The whole elephant tourism game is shady - it should be stopped.

Yes, the whole thing is questionable. It was a popular activity, along with elephant riding. Elephants don’t really appreciate the bathing process or need washing on a daily basis. These days it’s frowned upon yet some places do it, usually those who still offer rides. Maybe now, the activity will be outlawed .. but maybe it will be just driven underground - although non-contact, ethical elephant sanctuaries are the rage amongst western tourists, I hear that there are still camps that cater to Asian tourists who demand elephant riding, petting, feeding, etc.

I find canola a balance, and you are correct about GMO seed and the use of chemical solvents in the manufacture. I also use rendered pork fat for roast potatoes, palm oil for French fries, - we dont eat so much of it and it has a high smoke point. I think if we read so much into this, then we should stop eating meat, stop eating pesticide ridden vegetables that is sold in the market here, stop eating anything in this country with processed sugar, even the rice growers here seem to throw chemicals at it in favor of higher yields - we would be limited to eating raw bamboo shoots scavenged from the bush..

I had an incident the other week, dinner at a mates house - an Aussie guy has a Thai wife, just visiting from Auz where they live, he has no interest in Thailand, can't speak Thai, never came here on holiday before meeting his wife in Auz. The Thai conversation scene shifts, you can hear the Thai speakers speaking a little more aggressive, their faces screwed up. My wife is sitting next to me and we can hear the conversation across the patio - The Aussie guy becomes concerned and enquires along the lines of "is everything ok, the mood seems to have shifted" - I said "Its OK mate, they are just talking about food", my wife speaks good English, laughs and agrees.

I tried this before, I posted on here that the reporting time from 15 days until the date, not the 7 days after. So the last one, I filed in the window stated. Didn’t work.
