I'm no fan of the mutant horror that now impersonates Songkhran, but it doesn't seem a very good idea, vis-a-vis tourist expectations, to effectively cancel just about everything that has become it's "substance". Seems likely there will be more than a few foreign tourists saying "what the ****!" on the interweb and telling their mates not to bother next year. Muslims on holiday are a very different thing to Muslims at home, with religious "authorities" looking over their shoulders. It's a good thing that they get drunk (and do other "un-Muslim" stuff) in relative freedom. There is a residue of superstition in my Western European country......."some who believe". However It is a fundamental base for living, for the large majority, in Thailand. That is the huge difference.

In Asia you are more likely find that it is S.Korean Christian "do gooders" who are "taking over". They have been putting considerable effort into Evangelising for some years now. I found them to be particularly prevalent when I was in Cambodia.

You could have done both. I took 3 years off work to earn a degree as a mature student. Received a full Mature Student grant (UK) without having to pay a penny of my own money..........previous tax paying qualified me. It was ******* fantastic!
