  1. Sorry mate, it's just the texting lingo that crept in here, 555! 555=the Thai word for the number 5 is "ha". In this case three 5's "ha-ha-ha" it means to be laughing. Does that help?
  2. As I don't intend to retire anywhere full-time it would probably be something like this: 4-6 months in my home country from April to October. Could be just May through September but it's flexible. The rest of the time would be in no particular order. Laos Vietnam Malaysia Costa Rica Spain Portugal
  3. Here's an example and a few photos. Wakeboarding - Wikipedia
  4. Hopefully the Swiss guy retains a good Thai lawyer to defend him in this case. Might also want to get a foreign lawyer to look into the case as well in an advisory role since he can't practice law in Thailand.
  5. A lot of good positives and negatives on the list. Agree with some to varying degrees and disagree with some, again to varying degrees. I'm not really a big fan of Phuket so if that was my "Thai experience" I might be a bit jaded and paint the whole country in that light if I hadn't been anywhere else. Just like NYC and London are probably not good representations of their whole countries. Perhaps a better way to decide if Thailand was for you would be to live in different regions for 2-3 months at a time. Some things won't change wherever you are though. Alcohol and drug use can be found anywhere.
  6. I don't see a problem with meeting all of the requirements to obtain this type of visa except proof of lodgings. What if I already have a house to stay at that is owned by a Thai national but I don't pay any rent? Do I then have to make up a document stating that I am paying rent?
  7. A lot of changes over the years. When I first arrived here the baht was pegged to the USD at 23/1. It moved like a glacier to 25/1 where it remained for a very long time. In 1997 we had the Asian financial crisis. The dollar became very strong as the baht was floated. It somewhat settled in the 40-42/1 range. Began slipping a bit in the early 2000's and has now dropped to the lower 30's/1. If you were paid in dollars or pounds you were doing very well during this time. To me, the 90's and early 2000's were the best time to be an expat in Thailand. The jobs were good, pay was good, inflation in Thailand wasn't nearly as bad. Thai people seemed a lot happier then. The opening of the second stage expressway in 1993 was great! The BTS and later MRT were completed in the late 90's and early 2000's which made getting around a lot easier.
  8. In addition, we have cable TV too! A lot more channels that are of interest to expats.
  9. I always take a quick shower/rinse before getting into the pool. It helps to get rid of suntan cream and any oils that may be on my body like sweat, etc.
  10. Might want to explore some other countries too. Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Costa Rica, Colombia etc.
  11. I like Speed Stick. For years couldn't get it in Thailand. I would just bring 4-5 over when I was abroad. Now there are many other ways to purchase it.
  12. The slogan is way too long. Needs to be much shorter. The guy in the photo doesn't look to be wakeboarding. More like he is on a stand up paddle board.
  13. I can see it now. "We're celebrating Diwali, could I have one coke and four straws please?"
  14. This is an incredible distance that a fired round can travel. Granted, accuracy is severely compromised but it is still a lethal round if it comes in contact with someone. The 45ACP is a big fat round but will still travel 1800yds (1645 metres) which is very far. The 30-06 can travel just over 5 kilometres. It is a popular hunting round. The .223 Remington (5.56mm) is the most common round carried by US forces in their M4 rifles. It's also the caliber found in the civilian counterpart in the US called the AR-15. This round can travel just over 3.5 kilometres. Anyway, guns can be very dangerous when used in a reckless manner. This Brit should have been locked up and then deported!
  15. Don't hold your breath on this one. I'm sure that it will change a couple of times over the next 30 days.
  16. How many times have we heard this over the last 30 years? Ok, maybe Bangkok won't be as bad as usual but the other nearby provinces will end up being flooded.
  17. I had the Pfizer injections in mid-April and then again on 3 May. I had no side affects at all except for a sore arm at injection site that lasted for about 24-30 hours. Nothing since then. Despite being 62 years of age, I went out the next day and rode my road bike 65 kilometres at my normal pace.
  18. Will Thailand issue a visa to a US citizen that is not vaccinated?
  19. Looks like a fine establishment to get a haircut. I used to go to a place back in the 90's down in Silom. I think the name was Phensom barbershop. Closer to Surawong than Silom. Might of been in Soi 6 or 8. Good times!
  20. My condolences to you at this difficult time. I too have had a Thai wife pass away from cancer a number of years ago. Not an easy thing to deal with especially with kids involved.
  21. I had the Pfizer vaccine back in April and May. I had no reaction to the vaccine except for some mild soreness at the injection site. It went away in about 24-30 hours.
