Unlikely, inside the airport I think. If you want to know the location of a K-bank branch about 30 min. from the airport (by train and by foot), reply here.

It is possible to add funds; if told to do so by Immigration, go to your bank and deposit B 1000. (this is probably the required minimum deposit to a fixed-term account). As soon as you have got Immigration off of your back, you can return to the bank and withdraw it.
The rationale is likely that they want to know how you are supporting yourself, not simply that you have B 800,000 in the bank.

if you have white skin, there will be no shortage of people looking for a chance to take you for a ride.

In general, you should get a better exchange rate by exchanging on the Thai end. Providing more detail, such as the names of the receiving country and receiving bank, will probably attract replies from those with specific knowledge.

From a former Roi-etian who once travelled to Udon by bus: Departures throughout the day, every 90 min. or so, from about 6 a.m. to about 6 p.m., on the Pink Bus. I believe that Udon has 2 bus terminals, and that it leaves from the smaller one, somewhat removed from the downtown area.

Term deposits are also acceptable, as long as they are not locked in. In the passbook, look for a statement such as "No interest will be paid on funds withdrawn before the maturity date." This indicates that funds can be withdrawn at any time.

The two month (first time)/ three month (subsequent times) are minimums. Surely there is no problem having the money on deposit for longer than the required minimum.

To billd766 (Post # 11):
You can be a dual citizen - a citizen of two countries;
but you can't be half Thai, half British, or half any other nationality in terms of citizenship. You either have citizenship or you don't.

I concur with VocalNeal. Most parents want their sons to do the high school cadet program because completing it means they avoid the draft lottery later on. There is a news thread running about the recent tragic death of a cadet. He was at a military academy, not in the high school cadet program.

Nobody is "half" anything in terms of their citizenship. Reading between the lines, I presume your son is Thai.

To the OP: there isn't a lot to do in Kunming. They have a small zoo, and some floral gardens. They have a very mild climate, situated as they are at 2000 m elevation. It is 20 degrees almost every day of the year, with maybe 2 weeks of 15 degree weather in Jan., and two weeks of 25 degree weather in July. There may be day buses to Lijiang, though I would opt for the night ones, as it is about a 12 hr. trip.
Lijiang has now been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, with consequent high admission fees for foreigners to get into the old city. I was there just before those fees were introduced.

Jade Dragon Mountain, near Lijiang, Yunan, China
- fly to Kunming (1 hr. from Chiang Mai, 2 hrs. from Bangkok)
- overnight bed bus frorn Kunming to Lijiang and return

The rules are whatever the bank has told you, and knowing the experience of others is not going to change that. Having said that, I have had an SCB credit card for about 17 years. I have never had to provide collateral at the outset or subsequently. I was working in Thailand at the time I obtained it.

In 22 years here, I have met a lot of farang who act as though they are God's gift to Thailand, though this one might take the cake. These expenses won't be incurred in Thailand; why would the Thai Revenue Dept. allow them to be deducted here ?

Generally not, but if you give your location, that might elicit replies from those with local knowledge. Policies do vary from bank branch to bank branch.

Dec. 31 is always a holiday in Thailand.

Just checked the Bank of Thailand's website. It is not listed there.

To Ubonjoe - re your Post #9 - at which border crossings do they want to see a termination letter, please ?

Does it have a Visa or Mastercard logo on it ? If yes, I would venture a "yes" in at least some Malaysian ATM's.

By my reckoning, yes. That is B 65,000/mo.
Assumptions: 1 adult requires B 30,000 (30% of that is allocated to housing & utilities; i.e. B 9000)
each additional minor @ 60%: = 36,000
Total B 66,000
Rule of thumb for housing & utilities: Can not exceed 30% of gross income, so maximum B 19,500/mo. Allowing B 1500/mo. of that for the utilities, that leaves B 18,000/mo. for the housing.
Here is another way to calculate it. Comparing Thailand with my country (Canada), I use a factor of 3.5.
Cost in Canada/3.5 = cost in Thailand. So, take your cost of living in the UK, divide it by 3.5 and convert to baht.
If you are presently living in an expensive area of London, perhaps divide by 4.

I have been using CAT Phonenet cards for about 15 years, with very few problems. Maybe 1 time in 50 there is some sort of technical problem, but the frequency has been declining over time. I have used them in Bangkok, Eastern Thailand and Isaan.

I have just sent you a Private Mail on this topic.

I have been in the Transport Centre a couple of times, but can't recall if there is a K-bank there. And, I can't make their "Locate Us" button work on my computer. I was thinking of one at the Tesco-Lotus on the north side of Pattanakarn Road,, just west of Srinakharin Road. Using the Airport Link train to Hua Mark Station, you can get there in about 30 min.
