  1. All religion is nonsense. Religion is only one facet of the issues in the South. The primary grievance is the issue of recognition. The 2006 report of the National Reconciliation Commission was accepted by the Thaksin government but rejected by the Privy Council, the stumbling block being the recognition of Pattani-Malay (Yawi) as a working language in the region, Prem Tinsulanonda stated "The country is Thai and the language is Thai" so an opportunity for peace was lost.
  2. Same the World over, banks are quick to implement rate hikes on their borrowers, but slow to pass any benefit to their savers.
  3. Well that's because it is an insurgency, an armed rebellion against an occupying force, no one has declared a jihad. This is a dispute about recognition, recognition that the Pattani States have their own history, culture, language and religion. A recognition that the land was carved up and apportioned between British Malaya and Siam with no reference or asking the people that live there and a rejection of the policy of 'Thaification'. Before anyone suggests I condone the violence, no I don't, but I at least understand why the people are angry. .
  4. That's why my master password is a combination of the make, colour and registration plate of the first family car I can remember as a child. One of those things that's stuck in my head more than 60 years, so even if I got Alzheimer's there's a chance I might remember it.

  8. I left my home city of Birmingham almost 50 years ago, first to study, then after graduation to go work. I've spent 40 years working on projects around the world, I get back to the UK maybe once a year, though with Covid it's almost 3 years since my last trip. Growing up in Birmingham in the 60s and 70s was grim, Birmingham now is a far nicer place to live. It's now a clean, vibrant city, the city centre is a good place for a night out, nice restaurants, good pubs, places to sit out and enjoy a pint on a summer's evening. The old canals that were full of shopping trollies and garbage have been cleaned up and become pleasant walkways around the city. The city has always been a melting pot, there were West Indian, Indian and Pakistani children at school with me in the 60s. Immigrants from the former colonies just followed in the wake of Jewish and Irish families before them. I've never had an problem with Birmingham's racial diversity, I think it adds to the city's appeal. But diversity no doubt it comes as more of a shock to people who grew up in largely white towns and villages. Sure there are areas of Birmingham that are less pleasant to live, but they're all better than they were. No one would want to turn the clock back 50 years in Brum.
  9. Maybe next trip to the UK I might switch to my UK address and get a card. Not worth the hassle at the moment.

  19. Meats and Beans (Phone: 0888759555) (7.007463, 100.48286) Airy double height new build restaurant at 35 Soi 7 Rajyindee Road, nearby the MongMoon. Opened 2 years ago but closed for Covid not long after except for take away, now back in business. The name reflects the owner's passion for good coffee and meat. The restaurant has indoors and outdoor sections, with a mix of sit up tables and chairs, or couches and coffee tables, atmosphere was pleasant, decor post industrial chic with large pot plants. I can't speak for the coffee but the steak was the best I've had in Hat Yai and as good as you'll find in most steakhouses in Bangkok. There's little on the menu except meat. Beef is sourced from Black Onyx Angus, Rangers Valley, NSW, Australia, with a choice of ribeye, flat iron, hanger and picanha steaks sold by weight; prices range from Bht220 to 390 per 100g. Apart from Kurobuta pork there's also a selection of burgers and sausages, but nothing for non-carnivores. We ordered 1 ribeye and 2 flat iron steaks plus a few sides, though when the steaks arrived they came with a creamy mash and a green salad. The service was good, plenty of information on what steaks were available and the various weights, steaks are pre-cut frozen and vacuum packed so they'll find a steak closest to the weight you ask for, they actually brought the packaged steaks to the table to confirm the order, weight is marked on the pack. The meal was excellent, the steaks were cooked as requested, the meat was flavourful, juicy and tender, couldn't have been better. For drinks, apart from coffee, there's a selection of bottled beers and draught Singha available. I noticed someone drinking wine but I didn't see a wine list. Total cost for 3 steaks, sides and drinks was Bht3,445 not cheap but not expensive for what we had. Overall an enjoyable experience so we'll be back.
  20. I bet when he woke up this morning he was cursing his luck and wishing he'd stayed at Ajax rather than trying to manage this bunch of show ponies. UTV
  21. Well if if you don't it will certainly seem so. I do what I like, I don't have rules as I know I will break them. We all die someday, so might as well enjoy the time I have.
