Swede Left Broke After Romance in Chiang Mai

A Swedish tourist was found wandering the streets of Chiang Mai after reportedly losing all his money following a relationship with a Thai karaoke worker, according to local residents.

Get today's headlines by email image.png

The incident was first reported after Chiang Mai Provincial Police received complaints about a foreign tourist causing traffic disruption outside the Chiang Mai Red Cross building, behind Yupparaj Wittayalai School. Witnesses said the man was walking aimlessly in the road, in front of traffic and attempting to catch a sick pigeon, before blowing air into the bird in an apparent effort to revive it, will blocking the traffic.

Police from Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station were sent to the scene. Officers found the man holding the pigeon and persuaded him to move safely to the roadside.

Local residents told police the tourist is a Swedish man believed to be around 40 years old who has been staying at a guesthouse in central Chiang Mai for more than a month. They said he had become involved in a relationship with a woman working at a karaoke venue in the area.

According to residents, the man regularly travelled between Sweden and Chiang Mai and was always welcomed by the woman when he returned. Over time, people in the neighbourhood came to believe the pair were in a relationship.

Residents also claimed that when the tourist first arrived in Chiang Mai he appeared to be financially secure. They later learned that he had allegedly been deceived by the woman, who reportedly took a significant amount of his money before disappearing.

They said the man had been left both heartbroken and without funds, and believed this contributed to his apparent distressed mental state and aimless behaviour witnessed in the city.

Police safely removed the man from the road following the incident. Khaosod reported that further information has not yet been released regarding the tourist’s condition and if he required medical treatment, or whether authorities will investigate the allegations made by local residents, in connection with the alleged financial deception.

I suspect it was the distressed mental state and aimless behaviour that made him a victim, which left him heartbroken and without funds.

Can't fixed stupid... the lambs will continue to keep going to the slaughter as few warn them or want to listen.

However, the previous poster that said that if the boot was on the other foot, then the police would spare no resources in trying to find them and recover the money if it was a foreign scammer... bad optics that the police don't care about this guy because it was a scamming Thai woman.

Although, trusting a bar girl etc. is a moron move. Guess he only watched a couple of YouTube videos and thought he knew what he was doing when he got here... facepalm.

I know we never will, but it would be interesting to hear her side of the story. Every once in awhile I used to run into a pretty coworker that just couldn't shake off a foreign guy she had no romantic interest in. Cultural differences made it tough to communicate that lack of interest. And who can say no to a wad of "money for nothing"?

I can't count the number of love starved guys I've met on flights to visit their sweety in Asia. I've also run into a few guys on flights headed to the local US Embassy to read the riot act to whoever isn't issuing a visa to their sweety, in spite of months of online chatting and 2 or 3 weeks of meeting in person.

I suspect this is one of the zillions of stories of sick buffalos, monthly allowances from back home and promises of faithfulness. Lord knows, I've seen enough YouTubes and TikToks advertising how they'll teach the local girls how to get (and stay) on the foreigner gravy train.

Similar topic came up in another thread recently, and this case is a perfect example.

As an informal and inside the thread poll, and there are no right or wrong answers, can members post a percentage of who they attribute criminality / blame to in the case?

Is it 100% the guys fault for handing over the money, thus allowing himself to be scammed, or is it 100% the Thai girl's criminality, in which she scammed him, or, can it be apportioned to each. Eg. 70% the guys fault 30% the Thai girls fault.

Just interested, but for sure this guy is destined to be another "miserable expat."

Why would you Not be interested in seeing a longer term partners ID card.

Question is what are You hiding? Are you attempting to deceive someone?

Shows a photo, confirms age and has ID Number that is not helpful to anyone but Police, Government, offices of high authority. These are the only ones that see the Background Data when ID Card or Number is scanned.

Yes read the card maybe but take a photo? What kind of nigerian prince scam is this?

Every hotel or guesthouse you take them in.

And seeing them gives you a certain safety.

I always wondered about foreigners that don't actually know their girlfriends name. I can certainly recall all my Thai LTRs real names.

Yes, view the card, but why a photo?

Also, I'm not a hotel or guesthouse but tbh I don't date Thais

When they turn out to be 12yo and using their older friends ID, you have evidence to show the police/court.

I will pray you receive enlightenment. So if there are any problems your description will be Thai female with Black hair. That's about half the population of Thailand. If there is an accident and you want to contact her family or help Police locate her family how helpful is the yeah her Nickname is "Gold digger"?

A familiar story here, sad to say. Very easy to innocently fall for friendly charm in Thailand. Happened to me in the financial crash of 1997/1998. Badly scammed by my Thai business partners. Lesson learned is never part with more money than you can afford to lose.

I'm aware of a foreigner who started a service to get engine failed cars to an established garage. He had a layer set up a company with him as 49% owner and his girlfriend and her 2 besties as the other 51% shareholders. Revealed later the foreigner has no financial or management control in the way the business was registered.

Wisely the foreigner made a list of all the skills needed to operate the business.

Then he employed an accountant and a HR manager. All the employees Thai.

The accountant and HR manager quickly realised it would not be difficult to remove the foreigner and become the owners of the business.

They did that then did nothing to actually manage the business and did nothing to control the workers who were all allowed to take equipment / tow truck etc., vehicles away never returned.

Foreigner also discovered that he couldn't renew his visa and he fled Thailand.

These things do happen.

Why are you going with girls who could be 12 years old? Can you not tell the difference between a child and an adult? or 2 different Thai people?

I hope you receive some comprehension lessons; read the card, yes; know their name, yes; and take a photo. That's odd.

I either take a photo of the card, or it goes in the safe. They can chose.

This is put to them prior to getting back to my place. If they don't like either, then that's where it ends, and no, this is not because they could be underage, it's because of theft.

When traveling around Thailand, hotel reception take the card. I basically do the same when they come back to my condo.

I always recommend that guys coming here for the first time read several of the well written books about the way some women are very skillful at extracting money from their tricks.

It takes good survival instincts to survive and to thrive in the world these days, some people have it and some people don't.

Unfortunately a lot of guys come here in an incredibly vulnerable emotional state due to the extreme situations they face back in their home countries, with regard to women and the astonishing loss of femininity back in the West, and the challenges in engaging in a healthy relationship back there. It allows some women here to prey on them, and some of these women are very well coached. A man has to take his time here and get to know a gal, and a man has to be able to say an emphatic NO, to financial demands.

I once had a Porto Rican friend who was on contract in Bangkok tell me, “Man, I don’t know what happened, I think she put a spell on me or something, after three weeks, I had spent close to $15,000 before my wife called me and asked “Que de Pasa!!! Que esta Quasando mi Plata!! “ Must be all those different smiles the Thai women have we read about. Peace

It is known as extreme emotional vulnerability after enduring the lack of magic and lack of femininity of bereft Western women.

My last American woman girlfriend was in 1970, she was a couple years older than me, would wake up scratching her armpits and ask “What do you want for breakfast??” I left the States a couple weeks later and didn’t return until 1993………don’t miss Western women at all, been living on and off in SE Asia for nigh on 35 years now, minus a few short business trips. Something that happens in any country in the world. And sometimes it's a woman whose on the wrong end of it.

Happens a lot in Thailand, just that we never hear about it.

Some years ago an old Scottish retiree friend in Khon Khen hanged himself after the money had ran out.

Similar story here in Patong a few years back when a bar owner in a good bar Soi hung himself by jumping off the balcony of his rented house with a steel rope tied around his neck and the other end on the balcony support, which nearly decapitated him.

The bar was going through a quiet period and his girlfriend was asking for more money, which he gave her and she also managed to filch some from the bars takings, leaving him with just about nothing so he decided to end it all. Sad really because he was an okay guy.

Some Thai women can look much younger than their age and are very 'petite'. I knew one who I knew for sure was 31, but if she was done-up a certain way she could easily pass for 14 or 15.

It can be quite hard to tell how old Thais are, young or old, men and women.

My kinda lass, I would have her "done-up" that way 24/7!

Assuming of course the important bits wern't flogged out like a 31yr old needing a resleeve.
