English Premier League preview: what to watch this weekend

What could have been the most dramatic transfer deadline day in history turned out to be something of a damp squib. Alexis Sanchez didn’t move to Manchester City, Thomas Lemar decided against joining Arsenal and Riyad Mahrez and Ross Barkley both ended up going absolutely nowhere.

Chelsea did do a deal for Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater while Tottenham signed striker Fernando Llorente from Swansea. These players could all make their debut this weekend with Alex Oxlade Chamberlain (pictured) also set to play for Liverpool following his big money move from Arsenal.

The weekend’s big match kicks off at 6:30pm on Saturday as two teams with genuine title aspirations go head to head. Liverpool have plenty of pace up front with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah on the flanks while Man City could field an attacking quartet of Kevin de Bruyne, Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane.

There are also two mouthwatering clashes at 9pm. Reigning champions Chelsea go head to head with their predecessors Leicester City with Drinkwater potentially in line to feature against his former club while two outside contenders for the title meet as Everton host Tottenham.

Bizarrely, given that there are two high stakes games at 9pm on Saturday, the weekend’s three remaining matches offer little by way of excitement or intrigue. Manchester United will be looking to continue their perfect start with a potentially tricky trip to Stoke in the 11:30pm kick off.

But Sunday’s fare is is pretty poor with Crystal Palace travelling to Burnley in search of their first point of the season and  Swansea City hosting Newcastle in a battle between two teams who would happily settle for mid table mediocrity this season.

Poor analysis.

Could be a great game, Palace manager under threat and the Clarets (who have already beaten Chelsea away in the opening match thriller and drawn with Spurs away) looking for their first home points.
