More TAT lies.  Every year they report tourism is better and better while more and more business close down because of the lack of tourist and business.  If nobody at all came, they would still say numbers were up.  Pathetic people pulling numbers out of thin air in order to justify and keep their jobs.

I don,t get it, Pattaya has been on a slow but inexorable downslide over the past 15 years ! The only increase has been the numbers of chinese and indian visitors, who spend nothing and merely clog the streets. The beach is a complete disaster, the streets are probably the worst in Thailand, and it would appear that no funds are being spent on improving the infrastructure. Where do these figures come from ? and if the proposed alcohol price rises come into effect I predict a mass tourist flow to Cambodia.

I was there briefly last month & noticed that the traffic was much, much less than before - the baht buses were actually moving along beach road rather than stationary.  Went to Took Lae Dee in Royal Garden Plaza to eat and was almost the only customer there.  Walking street has all but died:  I was shocked at the number of closed up premises and didn't even see the usual throngs of Chinese desperately "following the pennant".

 

Maybe they are referring to another Pattaya, or perhaps they meant boom-booming? 

No they were just looking at Phuket.  It has been dead for several years even at high season.  I have friends with an apartment in Patong. They are in residence about 4 to five months in total over three trips a year.

Re Pattaya, there never were any "high end" tourists, despite having a load of golf courses. The infrastructure has always been so bad, no real "hi end" tourist would ever visit. They go to places like Mauritius and Dubai.

Sorry, but saying that if hotels had wine events it would bring in large numbers of "hi end" tourists to drink expensive plonk that they can buy back home without 100% tax is a bit over reaching, IMO.

100%? If the wine tax here was only 100% it would be a thriving industry. It is over 400%. The highest wine tax on the planet. That is correct. Highest tax on planet earth. Except maybe North Korea. LOL. It is bizarre. And it is all due to a few fabulously corrupt parliamentarians accepting alot of cash, from a few fabulously inferior wineries, to create what they called the "anti fareng wine bill". Hundreds of billions of baht are lost each year, due to a sluggish wine industry, as a result of their foolishness. Thailand could be a major player, if it were not for these churlish, silly, dumb, non visionary nationalists. It has hurt the tourism industry immeasurably. 

 

They keep saying how much they want to attract the high end tourists. But, no thought is ever given to the root causes, and the reasons why most avoid Thailand. Only at the five star hotels can you find decent wine service. And even there, the selection is very weak, and it is difficult to find a sommelier who really knows their stuff. Anemic. Pathetic. Boorish. Dumb.

Pattaya has been going down for years. My group friends from Ireland have been going there each year for many years now. However due to so many violent deaths and incidents with foreigners and the so called crackdown on prostitution they have decided not to go this year. 

If the Pattaya tourisim council think that foreigners holiday in Pattaya for the lovely beach or the quality sports or hotels 555 they are fooling themseves.

How about the taxis?????  The high end ladies get kicked out after half way (End of Jomtien beach) and can walk all the way to their homes. Blue Taxis ask 50 to 100 baht for new tourists.... Nobody knows which taxi go where.....

In the first half of 2017, a record 8 million people visited the resort town of Pattaya. This means that, if the numbers continue, the seaside sin city will welcome more tourists than last year.

 

This, despite ongoing stories about dirty beaches, robberies, and fights.

 

The numbers were released by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), who revealed that 13.7 million tourists visited Pattaya in 2016, spending THB200 billion for rooms, food, and fun.

You misunderstood me. I'm saying lowering the wine tax to any level would make zero statistical difference to the number of tourists in Thailand.

IMO no one comes to Thailand for the wine, wherever it comes from or how much it costs.

However, putting the beer price up probably would.

 

I think I already pointed out that the "real" hi end tourists do not come to Thailand, nor will they. It's just never going to attract the Monte Carlo crowd, unless they legalise casinos and spend a few trillion baht on infrastructure. On that I'm not holding my breath.

Statistics wise they may be correct. Chinese package tourists don't stay in the hotels that are closing, nor do they spend money on the things farangs do.

If they ever build the hi speed rail line from China expect the zero baht tourists to double or triple.

 

Don't overlook Malaysian men coming up on weekends for fun and games in southern Thailand. Every time they cross the border they are counted as a new arrival. Even bagpackers travelling overland to and back from surrounding countries are counted as 2 arrivals, as are visa runners.

 

The problem with relying on numbers and not monetary gain allows them to discount the importance of farang tourists that stay in more hotels and spend far more than Chinese factory workers.

Just coming back from Phnom Penh, the quality tourists: couples with little kids and pensioners, are already there. These people would not go to Pattaya, but spend big bucks in Cambodia. On the other hand, few Chinese and Indian tourists there.
