In the past decade beer &;Smoke tax in Thailand & prices the bars charge has sky rocketed.  1ST they said since bar operating times has been minimized/ prices had to raise up to keep some profits.  Then the alcohol companys even lowered the percentage of alcohol in there beers due to sell more beer or unknown reason,  now more & more tax. With 30 + million tourists people will always buy but Thailand is supposed to be land of smiles where Beer Smokes is cheap this should be brought up to government & thais be able to afford it too

Yes this is clearly done because of the subs well seen, can't be because of the massive debt of the rice program.. can't be because the health program is costing more and more.. can't be because Thailand has a small tax base.... must be the subs. Well spotted.

Well done. You manage to bring the rice scheme into this only the 6th post.

not sure if its been mentioned - Australia has free trade agreements with Thailand and in that there is wine taxes. Australia has a main export of wine.

I am interested to see how this one plays out as will Australia tax some of the benefits afforded to Thailand in Australia?

To tax on the RRP and the CIF price if what i have read is true is extremely optimistic in raising revenue. However in the same vein the increase in tourism if what i have read is true may be due to Thailand being an affordable place to eat and drink.

Maybe Mr Trump might as a major wine producing country choose to enforce the balance of trade with Thailand? As USA imports far more more Thai produce than Thailand imports USA produce.

The tax hike has been universally criticized as confusing for the public. Many have said the whole issue has been badly handled.

So what does it really mean? Think positive! You can rely on your "government's" skills to govern the country.

I've just been to Big C (Rama 4) to buy a couple of boxes of fruit wine. If the tax was going to be as heavy as suggested I'm sure the Thais (and expat bar owners who sell the fruit wine as proper stuff) would've cleared the shelves by now. There was only one other person in the liquor section and wine and everything else was in abundance. They would only sell 24 cans of Leo to each customer though, which I thought was strange. Maybe it's all a bit of a storm in a teacup?

I dont reckon expat bar owners stock their shelves with alcohol  purchased at Bic C.

Well I suppose hotels will have to sell wine at cost price if they want to keep their guest happy. Right now a glass of bottom of the barrel wine costs about 150 - 400 Baht. If these figures are accurate and they want to keep a markup they would need to charge around 900 Baht. Who is going to pay $30 for a glass of crap wine?

And as the poor masses awaken from their drunken stupors they will raise up bearing arms because they can no longer afford the only thing that releases them from their sheer miserable existence.

This is nuts. No authority will reveal, and no tax specialists and no bars know what alcohol prices are going to be the day before they are imposed. I have a bad feeling about this.

Marlboro and Mild Seven are already 125/130 baht a pack. Which puts them at two and a half times the price of the same cig brands in Cambodia and Vietnam. Looks like it will be three times starting tomorrow.

Time for a Trip to Laos.......200 Marlboro Cost me 200 Baht there a Month Ago....

not sure if its been mentioned - Australia has free trade agreements with Thailand and in that there is Australian wine taxes that have diminished over the years because of this agreement. Australia has a main export of wine to Thailand.

Also if what I am led to believe the fledgling Thai wine industry will not be taxed as this is import duty tax on imports. Is this to protect the wine industry of Thailand?

Like I said in the other thread, nobody can afford to drink normal wine of decent quality at these prices, that just make no sense.

More people, who NEED they daily dose will turn to the fruit wine, what nobody knows what is in it, and that sure is not healthier, and with more sugar too.  So this taxes make you less healthy, if you want to drink  something.

I also have nothing against beer, but the gaz in it, upset my stomach and get more reflux.  Nice stay in land of smile, without a nice relaxing glass.  And as for the locals, what will happen? We all talk about beer and wine, but we know in f&act they get drunk on whiskey.  So there will be always someone , who will offer local shit, that is not taxed, and get them completely out of their minds.
