Phuket's monkey populations have suffered from human interaction as tourism and population growth have merged with their previous habitats.

PHUKET: -- A meeting yesterday (September 18) between Phuket’s Governor and wildlife officials discussed the management of Phuket’s monkeys.

Following many reports from locals and tourists about problems caused by Phuket’s monkeys, the meeting agreed on a possible sustainable solution.

“There are 7 spots where monkeys live in Phuket including Rang Hill, To Sae Hill, Soi Thanun, Soi Ginggaew 9 in Koh Siray, Bangrong Pier and Baan Yamu. There are 2 types of monkeys including pig-tailed macaque and long-tailed macaque.

According to the complaints they can attack people for food, steal people’s items and wait for tourists to feed them while also sometimes attacking people walking past them,”

They sound more like hawkers, tailors and tuk tuk drivers than monkeys!

I love the start of the news "A meeting was held ...." with the pic of the Monkeys above ... Silly me, different kind of Monkey !

Its not going to be easy taking these Monkeys from their current life of luxury to an almost barren Island ... (Which ever Island it is) !

So they will stick them on islands, with no water and little food.  They will die out.. from malnutrition short term.. and any that survive will die out from inbreeding.

I thought Buddhist were supposed to help and respect animals.. not round them up as they are annoying and leave them to die on a desert island.  What do the monks have to say about the monkeys at the temples?  That can't be right!

Perhaps you could adopt a few, put them up at  home? Monkeys become pests when their population gets too big, what other choice is there, euthanasia?

Humans are the pests on Phuket.... The monkeys were there long before people!   If people stopped feeding them they would not associate people with food.. and so not be a problem.  Also if we stopped turning Phuket into a concrete jungle there might be room for monkeys and humans.

As, you, euthanasia would be kinder to the monkeys than the stress caused to them by capturing them, transporting them (in which many will get hurt or loose their young).. and letting them starve to death on a baking hot tiny rocky island.

But, as usual most humans are selfish and stupid creatures.

Allowing them to die is not killing them and can be construed as acceptable by many Buddhists. In Butan to ensure a regular supply of acceptable beef cows are grazed on a steep meadow near a cliff. The cows that fall off are consumed as food. Buddhists are only non violent in theory ..think of the treatment of the Rohynga in Burma or the actions of Pol Pot.

I always got the impression if you pay someone to do your dirty deeds for you, your still a good Buddhist?

No. A hypocrite. As with other religions and belief systems.
