Don't have a problem with the main facets of the stomach ulcer diet; beer, smoking, spicy food and coffee I can all just about do without.

Today - in a difference of opinion from previous doctor - the doctor told me tea was also a no-no. Understandable as it also contains caffeine, albeit it a smaller amount. This I will really struggle with, as I use it as a pick me up in the mornings.

Can anyone suggestion another drink which isn't caffeinated and could offer the same kind of effect? Preferably hot?

Cheers

In the last two or more years, there have been many articles about stomach ulcers actually being an infection.

I presume this has been suggested by your doctor.

You may not have given enough information for me to comment accurately. For instance, have you taken antibiotics to attempt to cure them.Ulcers are usually caused by helicobacter pylori, a bacteria which can easily be treated. You need to treat the cause of the ulcers and not the symptoms and therefore you need never have to be on an 'ulcer' diet.I presume doctors in thailand would be aware of this as it is common knowledge, but as I have little faith in the doctors here, maybe not.If you already know this and have tried antibiotics you can find more info on the internet.I hope you get cured as it's a terrible problem to have as I did for many, many years till it was cured.

Yep you need to cure the cause of the ulcer which is the Helicobater Pylori bacteria. You need to go see a Gastroenterologist and have a stool sample taken to confirm the bacteria. The medication to get rid of the bacteria has horrible side affects and I nearly gave up taking mine, but stick with the 10-14 day course and you will get better. If I recall correctly right after the 2 weeks of meds you wait another 2 weeks before having another stool sample tested to confirm eradication.

I personally didn't have an ulcer but a persistent cough that was mis-diagnosed as Asthma. H Pylori was the cause of that.

Nah they don't.

For years it was thought that ulcers of the stomach were caused by stress and spicy foods; however, now we know that 99% of them are caused by H Pylori bacteria which is treated as follows:

Helicobacter Pylori Infection:  1000mg amoxicillin, 500 mg clarithromycin, and 20 mg omeprazole, orally two times daily (morning and evening) for 10 days

My wife has taken this regimen and has been cured, but it can return as it did in her case a year later.  All you can do is take the antibiotics again and eat properly until the ulcer heals. Stay away from spicy food, beer, cigs and caffeine in the mean time or the ulcer will become irritated and never heal. The antibiotics will unfortunately kill all the good bacteria in the intestines, so you need to replenish that bacteria with probiotics or live bacteria from natural yogurt or fermented foods like Korean kimchi. Just Google H. Pylori and you can read quite a bit about it on the internet.

You can buy decaf tea. If there's none in Thailand, I haven't looked, ask friends to bring it over from GB, France etc. I buy decaf PG tips, Typhoo , twinning etc here in France and bring it with me.

What causes stomach ulcers?

Stomach ulcers are almost always caused by one of the following:

Rarely, a condition known as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome can cause stomach and intestinal ulcers by increasing the body’s production of acid. This syndrome is suspected to cause less than 1 percent of all peptic ulcers.

You can find caffeine free peppermint and chamomile tea in a 20 pack box at Big-C for around 120 baht.

Why are posters still sending dietary advice? His problem isn't due to his diet. Sort out the cause and live life to the full.

Guys..  And to the poster above...  I only wanted dietary advice,  thanks.

I know all posts were sent with good intentions but I am fully aware of the causes etc of ulcers and am well into four months of treatment (various tests, antibiotics,  and possibly another round of antibiotics depending on what an endoscopy I am having soon).

So I understand tea isn't related to the cause,  but I'm sure anyone else with experience / knowledge knows there are certain foods / drinks which can exacerbate the symptoms. Hence my post.

Thanks for the suggestions - cammomile tea is great but it sends me to sleep.  What can I use to wake me up?  Is there a red bull style drink without caffeine?

Amazing how reliant your mind can become on something to wake up.

The first question my Specialist back in Farang Land asked after it was discovered that I had an Ulcer was, "are you eating communally from the same dishes as others"?  He is from a neighbouring country and stated that curing me of H.pylori would be a waste of time if I was going to continue to dip my spoon into the same food as everyone else.  He was speaking from experience having found that in his country sharing was one of the main methods of spreading the condition.

The diet is rather bland but stay away from anything acidic - the internet is a great source of information regarding diet.  Aspro, which is an alternative blood thinner, when used over a long period of time can bring on Ulcers and was probably partly responsible for mine.  Tea contains acid, I am a tea lover so have learned to drink it very weak.  Ulcer is now either gone or under control.

Sorry but 4 months of treatment? Surely an endoscopy should have been the first course of action with a bowl sample being taken at that time?

My Thai Gastroenterologist says that the cause in Thailand is community hand eating with unwashed hands.

I'm not going to argue with you.  Maybe you're right.  But the medical opinion at the time was that antibiotics often clears the problem without needing one. Have already had blood / stool tests.

Either way, will be having endoscopy this week.

I wasn't looking for an argument either. I just wondered why they were taking so long. Good luck with your treatment.
