Sods law - just as I am about to leave Thailand, my Uk banks are asking me to return self cert forms stating I am tax resident in Thailand.  The form requires a TIN.  Can anyone advise how I can go about getting one?  I have been living in Thailand for 6.5 years, working remotely, if that helps.

Thanks in advance.

An obvious question would be have you been paying tax?

This happened to me about 3 months ago, two letters from my UK bank, first one to update contact information and the second asking for the TIN. I replied back to both by snail mail and during the transit period I received a second letter (regarding the contact information) telling me that restrictions had been placed on my account and my ATM limit had been reduced to 50 pounds a day. Even though I haven't had a UK ATM or credit card for 20 odd years it really has me P'ed off.

There is a misunderstanding from your bank, there is no need to obtain a TIN if you live in Thailand (outside EU)

Same banks dont understand just provide them with the above pdf. Worked for me (Germany).

5. Requirement to collect TINs
Paragraph 30 of the Commentary on Section I provides that a TIN is not required to be reported with respect
to a Reportable Account held by a Reportable Person with respect to whom a TIN has not been issued. Should
a Financial Institution request a Reportable Person to obtain and provide a TIN, in case such Reportable
Person is or may be eligible to obtain a TIN (or the functional equivalent) in its jurisdiction of residence, but is
not required to obtain a TIN and has not obtained a TIN?

No

I think it is the tax office that is asking for this info though.  DO you still think just put my residential address and tick the box saying I don't have a TIN number?

First thing i would ask why TIN is needed. If needed because of crs then provide them with the OECD lines above. OECD is the organisation that has blueprinted the whole process that is now being implemented by the countries.

Tell them that you dont need a tin because you dont work in Thailand and capital income outside of Thailand is expemted from thai tax. (Big surprise for the average bank clerk :-) )

On the other hand it should not be too difficult to obtain a tin but why alert thai authorities. In any case no information will be sent to Thailand as TH has not joined the crs system.

Good luck!

Thanks - I will confirm this with my accountant and hopefully he will be able to take care of the forms for me.
