Just been to Tops Supermarket and bought a few things. On checking my receipt, I found the amount for one particular item I was charged was a huge 19 Baht more than the advertised price. Since i) this was a product I might buy again, ii) an already expensive product (now unreasonably expensive), iii) I was curious to know which price was correct (advertised or charged) and iv) I am something of a cheapskate spendthrift, I went and asked.

They never told me which price was right, but they gave me the item for free! It is apparently store policy. I only wish I had bought 10 of them instead of 1!

Well done Tops. You're my kind of supermarket, giving me free stuff.

I think I will just cc our resident expert @cheapskatesam

Good to see. As an aside I went to the local market and bought 3 items at roughly a kilo each and was overcharged 80 baht approx on my looking at the scale calculations

I asked to see the weight again and she punched the same number into her calculator.. 80 baht more again, eventually the English speaking owner comes over and we did the weight again but the same girl gave her the numbers and still 80 baht over!

Only when I took the calculator and did it myself did they concede.. That's why I prefer Tesco and hate markets

Tops is Tops...many times I have failed to grab a free item in a buy 2 get 1 free deal and the girl always has left her register, ran to the proper aisle and grabbed my free one for me ! And opposed to my local "Competitor Super Market" (name changed to prevent defamation lawsuit and jail time), Tops does not have roaches crawling over everything ! That's the biggest plus in my book !

Wifey agrees.  Markets are getting too expensive and the quality is going down.  Plus, who knows what they've sprayed on those veggies.  Not 100% sure at Tesco, but gotta believe their QC is better.  Hopefully!
