Shoppers at Makro in downtown Udon Thani fled for their lives in terror as a soldier shot his pregnant wife in the back three times.

A seven year old boy and a staff member were also hit by stray bullets.

The soldier had a gunshot wound to the chest though police say he did not intend to kill himself.

The wife died soon after in hospital. The soldier is in a serious condition.

Police and medics who rushed to the Makro store on Nittayo Road saw shoppers fleeing in terror and staff using a shopping trolley to bring injured people caught in the crossfire to the front of the store to await ambulances.

Inside next to the meat counter a pregnant woman lay in a pool of blood, shot three times in the back. She was later identified as 40 year old Sirinporn Chumbunchu from Nong Preu, Kanchanaburi.

She was barely alive and died soon after in Soon Udon Thani Hospital.

Near her five meters away was 41 year old Kanchanaburi soldier Phichet Chumbunchu who had a gunshot wound to the chest.

Spent casings and bullets were scattered about and there was a 9mm automatic gun on the floor. The soldier was also taken to hospital after CPR was performed - he is in a serious condition.

In addition staff member Phuwan Ladda, 32 was hit by a stray bullet and another bullet hit seven year old Khampoon Temnithirat, a relative of the dead woman.

Phumiwit Wetchakama chief of Udon Thani police said that the two principal figures in the drama were a married couple.

Relatives told police that the wife had left the husband after she found out he had a minor wife. She went from Kanchanburi to Udon to be with relatives but her husband later followed her there.

He wanted to get back together but she refused and said she wanted a divorce.

After this she went shopping with her relatives to Makro and had no idea that her husband followed her there.

Chief Phumiwit said that the husband was handling the weapon that had jammed when it went off again. He said that he did not intend to kill himself.

And the Thai government wants to ban foreigners from owning and using guns ?    They need to put their own house in order first.

To start with they should ban ALL off duty police and military from carrying guns in public

And the theory is that unstable cops & soldiers become suddenly stable & rational when on duty?

I do think lowly soldiers, NCO's and lower grade officers are in no position whatsoever to really run anything.

Although I am not a coup admirer, I can't escape the idea most, if not all, politico's are unsuitable to run a country, province or town.

Everyone who has ever been in the military knows that NCO's run the military.

A horrendous crime without a doubt and yes jealously and los of face may well be the prime motives for the crime.

However I see yet again people  screaming about our Thai attitudes, yes we do have problems as do all other races,.

But did you oh so vocal keyboard typists  make similar comments and blanket judgements concerning   Stephen Paddock an American and his actions and the  general attitudes of Americans?

Some how I never noticed them.

If you and your countrymen or countrywomen  are innocent you can cast the stones but look to your own country first before you malign we Thais.

So much to be sad about here and police Chief Phumiwit refers to it, not as a tragic loss of two lives, but as a drama, as if it were a TV soap episode. And, judging from the number of rounds that were fired from an automatic gun, it's a wonder there wasn't another Las Vegas type carnage. According to the chief, the weapon, whilst being handled by the husband, jammed when it went off again, thereby shooting himself. Is he suggesting that the gun jammed whilst firing and that it was this uncontrolled shooting that caused the 2 injuries?

A terrifying picture of corporate irresponsibility on the part of the Royal Thai Army is clearly painted, here; first, an off-duty soldier carrying an automatic weapon off-barracks; second, that the calibre of soldier personnel is questionable and third, that army weapons are so badly maintained that they can JAM ON.

Every aspect of this near disaster paints an equally sad picture of the demise of family ethics in a country where the typical - though not every, of course - young married male simply cannot be trusted to uphold his marital responsibilities.

Maybe if I'd just entered the 6 words - Low on morality : high on irresponsibility - I'd have saved myself five minutes of head-shaking, but this whole tragedy, happening where my wife and I do our monthly 'big shop' is just so very, very sad. And Phumiwit, if you're keeping up with this thread on your smartphone, your poor performance will be viewed by most observers as RTP typical. Just try to show a bit more respect and compassion when called for.

And, Rooster, if you've suffered this outpouring, for you to see fit to observe that . . .  'next to the meat counter a pregnant woman lay in a pool of blood' . . . shows a lack of tact and subtlety, too.

While I agree with most of your post, you are totally ignorant on one fact.  There is NO SUCH THING as an "automatic" pistol.  All pistols are either revolvers or  "semi auto" (clip fed), which can only fire one round at a time.

And the government think it is a good idea to ban Foreigners from having guns......

Thai Miltary with guns = Good

Miltary using guns to kill people = No problem

Law abiding foreigners owning firearms (even though crime amongst foreigners involving firearms is basically non existent) = NO NO NO, VERY BAD Must urgently change law to stop these dangerous foreigners.

Thailand still the laughing stock of the world.

Who mentioned 'pistol'? The news clip stated '9mm automatic gun'. If you need to fire-off, have a go at Rooster, maybe, and try engaging just 1 brain before just 1 voice.

"I have a mia noi and my real pregnant wife wants a divorce.... I KNOW WHAT TO DO, I'LL KILL HER!"   This is what it must feel like to think without a brain.  This must be what goes through a monkey's head.   Too bad he missed his heart when he accidentally fired upon himself. Idiot. R.I.P. to the wife and unborn baby.

That might be because this is a forum about Thailand. There's your answer. Not too hard to work out, really.
