Tourist police have arrested a Danish man for allegedly running a fraudulent hotel-reservation website that cheated more than 400 European travellers out of an estimated Bt20 million.

Tourist Police Bureau deputy commissioner Pol Maj Gen Surachet Hakpal announced on Wednesday that Jacob Holm Schultz, 43, had been arrested the day before at Nonthaburi’s Central West Gate shopping mall.

Officers had a warrant issued by the Criminal Court on April 28 charging Schultz and five Thais with deceiving the public and violating the Computer Crime Act by posting false information online.

Surachet said the warrant was requested after his bureau received complaints from a firm handling credit card payments and from several foreign tourists.

They claimed that the website vacasianhotel.com had tricked tourists out of their money when they booked stays at Thai hotels.

On arrival at their hotels, the tourists were told there had been no booking, forcing them to pay again for accommodation.

Surachet said the website, which has been operating for more than two years, was registered by Secure System Co Ltd, a firm owned by Schultz.

He alleged that the money collected through credit card payments went to the bank account of Chantee Lomsak, 36, who forwarded it to Schultz.

He said Schultz had entered Thailand in September on a tourist visa.

Police are hunting for the five alleged accomplices.

If they spent as much time on catching criminals as they spend on their ridiculous "Power Point " presentations then I might agree that they did a good job. However, if you look at the expense and work that has gone into their little charade of professionalism with their stupid presentation, then to me these idiots are just wasting money. We need to see more people that have been ripped off being flown over to Thailand to have them point at the defendant, only then will justice have been served!

It's a fairly easy scam to do.  But time catches up with it as the complaints roll in.  As is often the case the fraudster keeps it going too long and gets caught instead of folding up the tent and moving on.  No sympathy here.  messing with somebody's vacation is really nasty.  People save and save and look forward to smooth sailing then run into this crap.

Even if you don't see it as a registered domain , it could have been redirected to an existing website. It's not unusual for scammers to redirect websites .

Looks like it might be a bit of phishing as the guy was hosting on his own Secure System Co Ltd:

"Surachet said the website, which has been operating for more than two years, was registered by Secure System Co Ltd, a firm owned by Schultz."

Again, possibly not a .com but a .co.xx..................

Its not a .com for sure as all .com's are registered in the same place and easy to check and you cannot divert if you do not have the name to start with

But police say its a .com so what do they know as usual nothing as far as the web is concerned as I can vouch for.

The guy will walk free if they carry on with that name, and that is a real shame as those who use the web and con people should go down.

Last thought, it was not a FB scam using the name was it? Now thats a possibility.

In this country it seems you can murder, wave a gun about, rape, commit violent acts, fraud and bribery with impunity, but God help you if you mess with anything tourist related !  Well done RTP anyhow, i'm sure the TAT bonus is in the post

This guy seems to be some kind of IT security guy so he probably knows all the tricks in the book.
