Funeral music

Featured Replies

This comment may belong in the Pub.   A few weeks ago I was pulled up by a well known cynical forum member regards Thai funeral music which is played  at volume 10 from 5am. A dreary bloody dirge or what?  It's probable that I'm going to croak here so I've decided that no music before 8am then first choice is ABBA, then Beach Boys, then the Monkeys.  Later in the 5 day celebration of my life we can introduce some Floyd and Zeppelin, Stones, Roxy Music.  When those three bangs go off I hit town.

Does anyone else have a comment?

I posted this comment because in my first 5 months in this village as a resident, not a visitor of 14 years, two deaths occurred within 50 metres of this house, separate events, followed by ear splitting PA music at 5am.  The latest death just 100m away, I expected more of the same. No, the bereaved family played the same music but at much reduced volume starting 6am.  So the need to blast your neighbours out of bed at silly hours is discretionary.

I pay due respect to all my fellow villagers' customs but reserve the right to absent myself after paying my respects.

On my day, give me one quick chorus of the funeral march and pop me in the oven.  I'll give the next step some thought.......hopefully it's not imminent.

i think that funeral is a waste of money, the music must choose the person whose funeral

MuntyCOre, I think your post was cut off by a quirk of the system. Funerals are very expensive but everyone in the village contributes, and it is recorded.  So, being filthy rich farang (I wish) we give generously.  The dirt poor here will give their last 20 baht for pride.  I respect these people, especially now that the rice harvest is on and everyone is out drying the grain and watchful for rain.  I'm going to build a house in the quiet end of the village, god help any chicken that wakes me at 2am.
