South braces for heavy rains as storm approaches

By The Nation

The Meteorological Department on Thursday issued an urgent warning to residents of 10 southern provinces to brace for heavy downpours and possible flash floods lasting into Friday.

The provinces are Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Ranong, Phangnga, Phuket and Krabi.

The department said heavy rainfall would result from a tropical depression over the lower South China Sea that, as of 4am, was 748 kilometres east of Songkhla at latitude 7 degrees north and longitude 106 degrees east.

The storm, with winds of 55km/hour, was moving slowly west across the southern tip of Indochina towards the Gulf of Thailand.
