Because of this Mr Wongbenjarat urged all tourists to first check whether a tour company is registered with the Tourism Department.

Visitors can check if a tour company is legitimate by visiting: http://www.tourism.go.th/

Just tried.. While there is an obvious input box you need the license number, owners name (english / Thai / spelling) or exact company name and no results seem to come back.

Tested for 2 companies I KNOW have a tourism license and I know the owners and companies (tho how does it handle minority / majority shareholders) anyway zero results.

Next step have all restaurants put down 100,000 baht in case someone has a bad meal.  Sounds ridiculous but maybe it would keep all the tiny bamboo table pop up 50 bt pad thai shacks from stealing business from established restaurants that pay their staff decent wages, social security, sign tax, rental tax, work permits and their monthly tax.  1200 baht for a liquor license is not enough to keep out the 5 day construction instant restaurant shacks from opening every 20 feet down in the islands.

If restaurant licences were 100,000 baht and enforced (haha yea right!)  I would be the first one in line to pay it.

I went to that website, because I'm curious. I found my way to this page titled: (Thai language) The 2015 List of Certified Thailand Tourism Standard Company
I clicked on it and found further lists for Accomodation, Service, Activities, Attractions, Tour Guides...
Within "Accomodation" I found links for Hotels, Resorts, Long Stay
So I clicked on "Hotels", and this is what came up:

That's it. That's all the hotels in Thailand that are certified. Bangkok has two hotels that are certified by the Tourism dept. Sorry about the formatting...

More window dressing unfortunately.

The whole thing is a scam, most TAT licence holders only pay the licence deposit for local Thai tourists from their province (10,000 baht).  Not the licence to handle foreign tourists (50,000-200,000 baht).  There is a way to check if a tour operator is registered but not what licence they actually hold.  At a rough guess I would estimates the number of claims processed each year at 0 plus or minus 0.  In the unlikely event you tried to claim, what’s the betting they would wash their hands of the problem and say the tour operator doesn’t have the right kind of licence?  I also suspect all those deposits paid are more likely to have funded Rolex watches than be held in a government operated deposit account.  I would further speculate that when a tourism business closes down, they can’t ever get their “deposit” back.

Not correct, the 10,000 Baht deposit is for tours, can be to anybody, no limit to province or nationality.

The deposits are held in a bank account, and can not be withdrawn without closing TAT license.

The companies get their deposits back after closing business.

Any more incorrect information you want to share?

Off topic but the street food is often better than the restaurants give you. They provide an income for the family that runs them. They provide cheap food that a restaurant could never do. Good street food is one of Thailand's big attractions. You seem to think that because you can afford restaurant prices everyone else should bow down to you and make way for your hiso lifestyle - tough luck you are in the minority so how would you like it if all the restaurants were charged 1 million baht a year to subsidize the provision of land for street food sellers? Or maybe you are a restaurant owner who is loosing business and just want to remove the competition.

The fund will then be used to speed up the payment of compensation to tourists who have been scammed by unscrupulous tour companies.

We all have to realize that’s this is just a giggle article, right?

also.... by and large, readers here aren’t tourists, so we probably wouldn’t qualify (eg... what info was given on your entry card, or are you on a non tourist visa?)

and... wais seem to be the most common form of compensation I read about, for any wrongdoing to another, so maybe they need to call in the “ Wai Fund”

but... they are going to take some money.... maybe enough to pay staff and facilities etc etc... maybe a little profit (maybe). If they do, this could be used to buy INSURANCE to cover scam compensation

i know... I do say stupid stuff ( at times... be nice ???)
