Monks disrobed for drunk driving

PATTAYA:--A Pathum Thani monk has been disrobed after being arrested for drunk driving in Pattaya.

Paisarn Panthong, 59, was pulled over by traffic police at a checkpoint near Chaimongkol Temple Oct. 31. Unable to speak clearly, he was given a breathalyzer test and found to be more than three times over the legal limit for blood alcohol content.

The monk later told police he drank to control shakes and other personal ailments. Before being arrested he was visiting friends on Soi VC and enjoyed a few late-night beverages.

He was taken to the Banglamung dean of monks where he was kicked out of the monkhood.

Modern world is too much of a temptation for them now and we hear these stories of monks committing serious crimes all the time. Quite frankly, I fail to see the need for having hundreds of thousands of monks and temples anyhow. How about making it harder to become a monk and then maybe it would cut out some of the losers that shouldn't be anywhere near an orange robe?

Might also restore some badly needed respect for the clergy here as it's taken a huge battering in recent years. Seems, at the moment, to be just one big sex, drugs, money and violence party for them these days. Also appears that many (not all obviously) of the high level abbots are nothing but criminals too, especially when it comes to financial crimes. I'm a bit cynical, but pretty much looks like to be nothing other than they (the monks/temples) providing a paid for service now to the still superstitious...of which there are many.

As an aside, it obviously doesn't help that so many of the Thais just throw ludicrous amounts of money at temples in an attempt to buy a 'stairway to heaven' or to gain face...just too tempting for the recipients, I guess...just not enough character or metal to do what they are supposed to.
