Thanks Sheryl,

I had this issue not long ago. I thought about going for the full monty as well. But I've never had any problems and have a healthy lifestyle & diet. I'd had a colonoscopy some years back; clear. So doubtful I needed any more scopies, though a hsp would be glad to provide them. And did I really need to know the exact name of the bug? Whatever would kill the others would probably kill it too.

So I decided first just to consult w/ the doc at a fairly well-respected local clinic. He listened, did an exam, and told me I needed an antibiotic; the hospital was gonna give it to me anyway but it'd be a lot more expensive there. OK. I got an injection and of course pills. And an antacid. The condition started improving right away and a week later was all cleared up.

Amazing how you appreciate plumbing in good working order after it's gone awry. Total cost: B1,200.

Doc told me I should practice cleanliness. I'm not bathing any more often but I did finally wash out my coffee cup.

I'm not recommending anything. Just throwing that out there as a possibility.

One needs to be very careful re antibiotics as they disturb normal gut flora. Also, if done empirically and not based on a culture, they may nto work and it may then prove difficult to get an accurate culture. J6 was lucky but I have come across many, many cases of people whose guts have been totally messed up by shotgun antibiotic treatment and it sometime takes years to get things back on track.

In addition it is not at all the case that "Whatever would kill the others would probably kill it too. " Intestinal bugs come in many different forms: protozoas like giardia, amoeba, viruses, bacterias etc and they do nto respond to the same treatments. In addition, among bacteria there are different ones, with different antibiotic sensitivities.

In this part of the world a logical first step for diarrhea lasting more than a week or so is to check stool for ova and parasites as giardia in particular can be the culprit. If that  comes up negative, next step would be a stool culture and antibiotic sensitivity test on any abnormal organisms isolated. The first test can be done in one day but the second takes at least 3 days, longer if the sample has to be sent elsewhere - small hospitals might not have the necessary facilities and clinics never do.

It sounds like stool culture may be what the OP has had done in Hua Hin in which case he should first wait for the results before consulting anyone else.

Sometimes chronic diarrhea is nto due to an infection at all but rather to inflammatory bowel disease.

And, some people simply have some degree of loose stools continuously  when in Thailand. Presumably in OP's case it is a new occurrence and not something that started up when he came here.
