I just got back from a grueling trip to the States with my daughter, 12.

During the trip I got what I believe (self-diagnosis) was a stress fracture on a metatarsal bone in my foot, which swelled up badly and was too painful to put a shoe on or put any pressure on.

The Cathay Pacific air hostesses called a wheelchair for me and the service was phenomenal.

The staff member took me  and my daughter though baggage, customs Immigration, waited as we used the bathrooms, then cut the really, really long and slowly-moving queue, all  standing in line with their baggage and waiting for metered taxis.

I was at the absolute end of my rope and this free service saved me, so I just wanted to note what a good job they do.

I did tip the guy 200 baht, which he seemed very grateful for.

I didn't catch the name of the company providing this service, but I just want to say what a great job they did.

Yes, and they now have direct flights to Boston...It was a 15-hour grind going over the North Pole. Watching those cute  air hostesses do their jobs so professionally made it bearable, and also makes Delta and the other American carriers look lame.

I guess it comes as little surprise that no American carriers can compete on trans-Pacific routes any more.

CX has direct flights to Boston from HKG??   When did that start?  I've been using Emirates to BOS and have been checking out Hainan Airways which I've heard good things about.  How much was a RT?

Sorry, but I don't know when it started.

I was surprised at how cheap it was , about US$1,200 r/t for cattle class...even though we booked only a week in advance.

I just booked it directly through CX though one of those cheap online collator sites. On the way over, my daughter and I had a row of three to ourselves, with a seat between us. That made a huge difference. The way back takes longer, about 15 hours.

Most of the passengers were Asian. The configuration of the economy section would have made it difficult had it been all full of plus-size Americans like me...

Some airlines have their own wheelchair service but the main service is provided by the airports. I have to use it as my mobility is quite impaired and I could not manage without it. The guys that work on it are great and deserve better money than they are paid.

My first arrival, 2013, Air China arranged a chair for me. I do not know if it was one of their people, or if it was arranged with a Bkk outfit.
Whatever, it made the formalities after a long trip much easier to bear.
We had had several hours layover in Beijing. I had been deposited in a waiting area near some not-yet-opened shops, and told "My sister come for you".
The shops did open in the fullness of time, and I got a sandwich and coffee... then boredom commenced.
I finally gathered myself, my walking stick and oxygen concentrator, and very slowly found my way to the next departure gate, where "my sister" caught up, out of breath and out of sorts, in time to wheel me through the departure gate and to the aircraft, with some sotto voce muttering involved.
I did apologise and make a nice donation, which from the smile seemed to be the correct path to forgiveness.
I really have to applaud these very nice people who somehow manage to take care of dumbass farangs who do not know any "civilized" languages.
