MANILA (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump sought the help of Chinese President Xi Jinping in the case of three UCLA basketball players detained in China on suspicion of shoplifting last week, said a senior White House official.

Trump raised the issue with Xi during a dinner held during the U.S. leader's Nov. 8-10 state visit to Beijing, said the official, who spoke to Reuters in Manila. Trump is currently in the Philippines capital for a summit of Asian leaders.

The three UCLA men's basketball players were detained by police in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou over allegations of shoplifting and were not on the team's return flight to the United States on Saturday, ESPN reported.

According to the White House official, Xi said he would be helpful and look into the matter. The official said the players had so far been given relatively light treatment as a result of Trump's intervention.

"It's in large part because the president brought it up," the official said.

The UCLA team had been in China for the season opener against Georgia Tech in Shanghai on Saturday, which UCLA won 63-60.

The teams had travelled to Hangzhou earlier in the week to visit the headquarters of the game's sponsor, Chinese tech giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.

The three students - freshmen LiAngelo Ball, Cody Riley and Jalen Hill - were taken in for questioning by police about alleged shoplifting from a Louis Vuitton store during the Hangzhou visit.

They were released early on Wednesday, but are barred from leaving China and confined to a luxury hotel in Hangzhou pending legal proceedings, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Odd.

I imagine there must be at least hundreds of Americans in China with legal troubles and even more Chinese in the USA as well.

Focusing on those guys? I don't get it.

Seems so superficial. Not to them of course though!

Idiot, one of the students is filthy rich too! They should serve whatever sentence given to them, and Trump should not have wasted his time and intervene on this petty matter. This did not happen in north korea.

'Superficial' is Trump's middle name.

He has as much substance as a fart.

Hmm, and if some Chinese students break the law in the USA they will be let off if the president of China asks for it to be so?

If you break the law, you should face the consequences.

How much embarrassment can Americans take

I hope Xi gave them a get out of jail free card and a Louis Vuitton souvenir just to make Delta Tango look even more idiotic; if that is possible ?

Ah so Grousy, you've been allowed to see the evidence and proof of their guilt then?

They were being held while the alleged crimes were investigated. The matter was settled to the authorities satisfaction (money was paid presumably)

So yes, these men are innocent of a crime unless embarrassing one's country is a crime?

Delta Tango is guilty of being an embarrassment. I'll bet Xi is still laughing at him?

So again, with no proof but your presumption of bribery, you imply they were guilty but let off because someone bribed someone (an act punishable by death in China).

So let's say, the shop made a mistake, or were looking for some publicity or there was some racial spite, or whatever; you think the innocent players an embarrassment?

Maybe their color makes them likely shoplifters hey?

No smoke without fire?

Probably, they just paid for their goods?

Maybe an American contributor  can investigate declarations on entering the USA!

Now, that would be ironic, not declaring genuine merchandise or getting pulled for fakes!

Ha ha

What colour were they?

Did the handbags match?

So Clinton is a lesbian who was in love with the assistant whose husband was arrested for sending nude photos to other women?

Thaksin is Yingluck's dad. Hitler lived out his life in South America; the reptilians control the world through the Masons and Skull and Bones; Obama is a Muslim Kenyan; JFK was shot on orders of Johnson; and David Icke is the son of God.

No smoke without fire - so according to the wise owl Grousy must be true.

Have you been at your namesake too much today already??

Now where did Mrs. BB, a saint of a woman, hide those cartridges ......................:ninja:

No, no!  A fart has more substance -- and smells better.

Special treatment for these basketball players? As if they haven't gotten special treatment most of their lives. I bet they were laughing as the plane that got them out of China took off.

If they were laughing they're fools. The only reason they're free is amazingly lucky timing of the clown potus being in town and it getting involved with their problem. Normally such an incident wouldn't be elevated like that. Yes one of them is connected to fame but he's not all that important. Again so lucky.

These disadvantaged atheletes will rise above the occasion to someday kneel at an NBA game out of respect for their Black Lives Matter sisters and brothers.  Those who blame Trump for the hoodrats boost'n some swag don't understand the difficulties and prejudices that inner city youth face.  I have seen the way Blacks are treaated in China and I can tell youthey are judged even harsher than the keyboard warriors here judge Nigerians. Do you really think basketball jones and his brothers would get a fair trial? Trump saved their black @sses and it proves he' s not a rascist.

They were detained in their luxury hotel.  Hardly harsh treatment.      Maybe room service sucked?

I doubt if it were a Black ESL teacher in China,  he would have intervened.

Here's a different, american ex-pro athlete who apparently is still locked up in China
