5 killed, 9 wounded in pickup truck crash

Five people were killed and nine others injured when a pickup truck skidded off the road and hit a tree in Sattahip district of Chon Buri province on Saturday afternoon (Nov 18), police said.

Pol Lt Col Pasawat Wiripornnoppakhun, chief investigator of Sattahip police, said the accident occurred at about 3.20pm at kilometre marker 164 on Sattahip-Na Klua road in Tambon Bang Sare.

Eyewitnesses told police that the pickup truck, which was modified into a song taew passenger vehicle, was running at a high speed when it skidded off the road and rammed into a roadside tree.  The tree branches swept out the vehicle’s roof and the passengers, most of them students of Sattahip Technical School, were thrown out of the truck.

Fate, aided by an idiot irresponsible driver. Could have cheated Fate with a better driver.

The daily carnage continues......

How sad that these young lives  have been ended by a reckless lunatic, who just runs away from the tragedy he has caused, what kind of animal doesn't help injured people?  A modified pickup, an old one at that, being driven at high speed with the weight of many students raised up in the back, the slightest thing would have made the vehicle lose control. Was there not a single policeman to stand up and say, 'NO , let's not let this happen, not this time' ?  No of course not.

Thai's will just say it's fate, driving too fast ,with a truck full of kids

not fate, just stupidity,I hope the driver is caught and punished, more

for running away ,than anything, RIP the dead, speedy recovery for

the injured.

regards Worgeordie

Horrific, can't imagine why they only feel the need to have a safe driving campaign at christmas time

Wash, rinse, repeat.

I've seen this type of vehicle loaded with youngsters, 4 standing on the tail step, music blaring from oversized speakers, traveling at speed on the 7 motorway.  Unbelievable,

Also more than once seen terrible driving of minivans from the allegedly top school in the area

If you want your kids to have a chance of longevity......transport them yourself

I read this morning in yesterday's Bkk post

30 deaths a DAY on Thailands roads

so by tomorrow morning 30 more don't have a future

And run a very good chance the longevity will be destroyed by some other idiot driving into you.

It's a good year for amulet sales...

Thai news is reporting that the driver was having a vigorous argument with his wife when he lost control and crashed.

"was running at a high speed when it skidded off the road and rammed into a roadside tree".

In fact, one never heard of any vehicles running at a reasonable speed going into a skid and ramming into anything, how on earth not everyone understood that? :coffee1:

"that the pickup truck, which was modified into a song taew passenger vehicle"

A rather ponderous and roundabout way of saying "baht bus".

Do not hold your breath while waiting for them to be banned (which would bring Thailand, beyond Bangkok, to a standstill).

That will be FATE at work again then

Any where else in the world it is against the law to ride in a Vehicle without fitted Seat Belts or a Factory Fitted seat.

They changed the Laws in Australia in the 80's you cannot ride in the back of a Van or Pickup for this very reason.

RIP for those poor unfortunate people who lost there Life's and Futures yesterday through no fault of there own.

Won't any action ever be taken to stop this carnage?  RIP the dead students and hope the injured recover soon.

Where have you seen it was "self-modified? Because every song-teaw are modified pickups...

...this reckless driver alone was enough to cause all this misery.

So there it is.  He has 'a good excuse.'  It was his wife's fault.  Pay out a little cash, wais and apologies to the family, a little more cash - the authorities will consider it all good.  No need for charges or fines.  Same, same but not different.

How about the law regarding people in the rear of pickups?    Surely not another deferred one.

30 per day - come on ---

20,000 + per year using the maths I was taught is certainly is a lot more than 30 per day.

Wow. My neighbourhood. I may even have travelled in that same truck, though not when overloaded during school transport time.
That should be a clue to the cops of when to have their roadblock campaigns.
Screw harassing farangs on motor scooters, who after all are most likely to only injure or kill themselves. Establish a maximum passenger capacity for the songthaews, and ENFORCE it, as well as speed limits.
Oh, yeah. Forgot where I am for a moment.
There is not a single speed limit sign that I can recall between Sattahip and Pattaya.
When you see a songthaew down at the heels by six inches alarm bells should be going off .

A very sad event and pointless deaths of young students by a scumbag driver who fled the scene. My thoughts go to the families of those dead and injured. They must be distraught beyond words and excuses by the scumbag who ought to be incarcerated for a long time.

RIP, youngsters.
