WASHINGTON/LONDON (Reuters) - Britain criticised U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday after he retweeted anti-Islam videos originally posted by a leader of a far-right British fringe party who was convicted earlier this month of abusing a Muslim woman.

The White House defended Trump's retweeting of the videos, as criticism poured in from U.S.-based Muslim advocacy groups and the Anti-Defamation League.

Jayda Fransen, deputy leader of the anti-immigration Britain First group, posted the videos which she said showed a group of people who were Muslims beating a teenage boy to death, battering a boy on crutches and destroying a Christian statue.

Trump's decision to retweet the videos prompted criticism from both sides of the Atlantic, with some British lawmakers demanding an apology and U.S. Muslim groups saying it was incendiary and reckless.

"It is wrong for the president to have done this," the spokesman for British Prime Minister Theresa May said.

"Britain First seeks to divide communities through their use of hateful narratives which peddle lies and stoke tensions. They cause anxiety to law-abiding people."

Reuters was unable to immediately verify the videos and Fransen herself said they had come from various online sources which had been posted on her social media pages.

"I'm delighted," Fransen, who has 53,000 Twitter followers, told Reuters, saying it showed the U.S. president shared her aim of raising awareness of "issues such as Islam".

"What we saw today is one of many videos that is circulating on anti-Muslim hate websites," said Ilhan Cagri with the U.S.-based Muslim Public Affairs Council.

"It is years-old and simply aims to breed fear for Muslims and Islam and breed violence. It has nothing to do with the practise of Islam itself."

As a candidate, Trump called for "a Muslim ban" and, as president, has issued executive orders banning entry to some citizens of multiple countries, although courts have partially blocked the measures from taking effect.

"Look, I'm not talking about the nature of the video," White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters. "The threat is real and that's what the president is talking about is the need for national security, the need for military spending, and those are very real things. There's nothing fake about that."

The White House repeatedly refused to be drawn into the content of the videos or whether Trump was aware of the source of the tweets, instead pivoting to the line that he was raising issues concerning the security of Americans.

Trump's promotion of the unverified videos contrasts with the way he often criticizes mainstream U.S. media, lambasting some outlets for "fake news" when they air segments he regards as being against him.

"A lot of folks want to focus on the videos. We want to focus on the issues. It’s about safety. It’s about security. It’s about ensuring that individuals who come into the United States don’t pose a public safety or terrorism threat," White House spokesman Raj Shah told reporters aboard Air Force One.

The Anti-Defamation League said the retweets would only encourage "extremists and anti-Muslim bigots in the United States and abroad who exploit the propaganda value."

"Such content is the engine that fuels extremist movements and will embolden bigots in the U.S. who already believe the president is a fellow traveller," the ADL said in a statement.

BAN ON ISLAM

Britain First is a peripheral political party which wants to end all immigration and bring in a comprehensive ban on Islam, with anyone found to be promoting the religion's ideology to be deported or imprisoned.

The group, which rarely garners any media attention but attracts a few hundred protesters to its regular street demonstrations, states on its website it is a "loyalist movement." Critics say it is simply racist.

Fransen was fined earlier this month after being found guilty of religiously aggravated harassment for shouting abuse at a Muslim woman wearing a hijab.

Last week, she was charged by the police in Northern Ireland with using threatening, abusive or insulting words in a speech at a rally in Belfast in August.

Along with the group's leader, she was also charged in September with causing religiously aggravated harassment over the distribution of leaflets and posting online videos during a court trial involving a number of Muslim men accused and later convicted of rape.

Politicians in Britain condemned Trump, with Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition Labour Party, describing his tweets as "abhorrent, dangerous and a threat to our society."

U.S. civil rights and Islamic organizations said the posts amounted to an incitement to violence against U.S. Muslims.

"These are actions one would expect to see on virulent anti-Muslim hate sites, not on the Twitter feed of the president of the United States," Nihad Awad, national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the largest U.S. Muslim civil rights organisation, said in a statement.

David Duke, a former Ku Klux Klan leader, praised Trump. "He's condemned for showing us what the fake news media won't," Duke wrote on Twitter. "Thank God for Trump! That's why we love him!"

Fransen, who used similar language to thank Trump, said the president's retweets showed his outrage at her treatment by the news media and the authorities.

"The important message here is Donald Trump has been made aware of the persecution and prosecution of a political leader in Britain for giving what has been said by police to be an anti-Islamic speech," she said.

"He (Trump) stands for free speech and he won't be deterred by any petty left-leaning journalist in Britain saying he shouldn't be retweeting any individual."

The video was fake. Again, don't fall for Trump's BS. You're being duped.

ORIGIN

On 29 November 2017, United States President Donald Trump retweeted three videos from Jayden Fransen, the deputy leader of the far-right anti-Islam political party Britain First who was found guilty of religiously aggravated harassment in November 2016. As this group has a penchant for sharing out-of-context, misleading, and false information, it wasn’t surprising that at least one of these videos, which purportedly shows violent acts committed by Muslims, had a misleading caption :

And you should be 'spot-on' ejected from this community for being a supporter of racism and hate speech. Your comment shows how shockingly low one can stoop so early in the morning.

Trump is getting to the deranged stage. He complains of 'fake' news and now Sarah Sanders actually says that it doesn't matter if the videos are real it's the message!  The lunatics are running the asylum that the USA is becoming. Make Asylums Great Again.

The only ugly truth is people with ugly hearts are supporting white supremacist agenda's and enabling a lunatic President to run amok in Washington. I imagine if Trump launches a Nuclear strike on N Korea you will be jumping up and down clapping.

Yes. The woman spreads hate filled lies, and encourages racial hatred. A fantastic example for a racist, bigoted liar to support. Trump, the proven racist, has never cared in the slightest for small matters like the truth, so why should he bother now. Worst and most disgraceful  President ever.

What is equally disgraceful is the amount of racist trolls supporting him here this morning.

94% of Americans know Trump is a vindictive nut case.  What's the % in UK?  We don't know, but the number is growing.  Knowledge of Trump's mental illness is spreading around the world.  It starts in English-speaking countries (incl. AUS/NZ, S.Africa) and Europe, and spreads from there.   In short order, Bushmen and Inuit will know also.

Even mainstream news outlets are openly talking about/debating the degree of Trump's mental illnesses.  Is he just a dotard, or is he dangerously sick in the mind?   I opt for the latter.

This man child, just cannot help it. On a daily basis, he demonstrates how deplorable a human being he is. A truly sick, sociopath. The problem with this behavior, is that the more inane, silly, ridiculous, non-presidential, petty, vengeful, hateful, and racist he appears to be, as time goes on, the more toxic he becomes. He is not changing. It is just that who he really is, is becoming more apparent by the day. He has always been a hateful racist. He has always been a vengeful misogynist. That is who he is. It is just being revealed to us, as the layers of this poisonous onion are being peeled off. There is so much more to be revealed about this guy. My guess is that all of the stories about the Russian orgies, and Orgy Island, with Jeffrey Epstein, and the stories of sex with underage girls aboard Epsteins jet, with Trump on board, are all true. He is a freak. It is just that alot of people just do not know the full extent of it yet, and alot of his supporters were willing to go along with all of that, as they despised Clinton, who was a horrific candidate, and a terrible choice for the dems. Tim Kaine was even worse.

I used to be in commercial real estate in New York. I met a few people who had direct dealing with him. They all said the same thing. After walking away from the closing table, they felt as if they had just spent 6 years in a federal penitentiary, and had been abused by every inmate, every day. This man was so abusive, so hostile, so unwilling to leave even one dollar on the table. They said if they did not really need to do the deal, they would have just walked away. That is who this man is. An absolute pig.

Things are only going downhill from here. It has become obvious, that even with a man as competent and strong as Kelly on board, nobody can control Trump, nor his staff. They are all out of control. The ship is sinking. It is fun to watch. Get used to saying President Pence.

In 2014 Jayda Fransen stood for her (she is deputy-leader) Britain First "Party" in the Rochester and Strood By-election.

One would think it to be a "good" place for her sort.

Out of 40,056 votes she received.........56.

She stood for the Mayorial election of London in 2016:

Labour  44.2%

Conservative  35.0%

Britain First 1.2%

Strange that the TWH (Troll in the White House) seeks self-authentication from such a total loser.

But then again the Constitution of the US determines that, sooner or later, he, along with every other President, must "lose".

Rather scary to contemplate how his peculiar, troubled personality might fail to deal with that certainty.

She won't. Theresa May always avoids confrontations and always sides or minimises dispute with the strongest political entity (in this case the White House).

However, Trump won't come if he will face protests. Trump demands the welcome his ego craves on all his foreign trips. If he doesn't get it, he will postpone the trip or cancel it himself.

I don't think fighting fake news with fake news is the right way to go. Obviously you feel differently, when it suits.
