Flooding in nine southern provinces amid continued downpours triggered by a strong monsoon have claimed five lives and affected 113,900 families, a senior government official said on Thursday.

 

Chayapol Thitisak, director-general of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, said floods in nine provinces from Sunday to Wednesday had killed five and affected 385,498 people in 2,540 villages. The affected areas spanned 396 tambons in 74 districts of nine provinces.

 

The nine affected provinces are Phatthalung, Trang, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Pattani, Songkhla, Narathiwat, Yala, Satun and Surat Thani.

 

Chayapol said eight of the provinces were still suffering severe flooding.

 

1. Pattani: Eleven districts are still under water, including Khok Pho, Nong Chik and Yarang districts. Two people have died.

 

2. Yala: Eight districts have been flooded and one person killed. The flooded districts included Muang and Yaha.

 

3. Songkhla: Two people have died and floods have affected 10 districts, including Thepha, Namom and Sathig Phra.

 

4. Phatthalung: Floods have affected 11 districts, including Muang, Khuan Khanoon and Sri Banphot.

 

5. Trang: Six districts have been affected, including Muang, Huay Yod and Nayong.

 

6. Narathiwat: Floods have hit 13 districts, including Muang, Chanae and Joh I Rong.

 

7. Nakhon Si Thammarat: Eight districts are affected, including Cha-uad, Bang Chan and Hua Sai.

 

8. Surat Thani: Four districts have been hit, including Ban Nasarn, Phra Saeng and Chaiyaburi.
