Transparent garbage bins for Bangkok's public parks

BANGKOK: -- Transparent garbage bins are now being installed at all public parks here, as one of the stepped up security measures following the deadly bomb attacks in the Thai capital on New Year's Eve, Bangkok governor Apirak Kosayodhin said Sunday.

The see-through containers are meant to preclude the secreting of bombs and suspicious parcels in the city's trash bins.

Replacing the old ones which are fabricated from metal and thoroughly non-transparent, 200 new garbage bins have been installed at four major public parks, Mr. Apirak said, adding that each bin's capacity is 20 litres and that it costs from Bt550–590 each.

He said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) planned to install altogether 2,000 transparent garbage bins at all 22 public parks here by the end of next week.

Also, in order to boost security, BMA workers will collect garbage discarded by households more often and there will be no large-sized garbage bins on footpaths of main roads, he said. Garbage bins at bus stops here will also be re-designed and, of course, and be replaced with transparent ones in the near future.

Changing garbage bins follows a series of bomb blasts here on New Year's Eve that killed three persons and wounded 42 others, including nine foreigners.

BMA introduces new transparent rubbish bins across city

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has placed transparent rubbish bin in 22 Public Parks to prevent 'hidden objects' and suspicious items to be placed in the bins.

Bangkok Governor Aphirak Kosayothin (อภิรักษ์ โกษะโยธิน) said BMA has replaced 2000 old bins to transparent bins in 22 public parks across Bangkok city. Apparently, BMA has already placed new bins in Lumphini Park, Vachira- Benjathit Park, Benjasiri Park and The Queen Sirikit’s Park.

Mr. Apirak mentioned the BMA has removed all the rubbish bins along the roads and bus stops for public security. He further added that the black garbage will no longer be used as they will all be replaced with transparent ones.

He has also instructed officials to clear the rubbish bins more frequently in public places such as Chatuchak weekend market.

Now they'll have to resort to even more clever methods to hide grenades like the ones used on new years eve. Lets hope the bombers don't have access to paper bags. :o

Yeah they'll have to remodel their bombs now. Thos big black balls with string out the top and BOMB painted in white will be no use. :D

Not a full deterrent but a good idea. My firm is currently working with local authorities to replace with clear bins that sit outside our branches. Many other more proactive measures in place, but every bit helps.

During the 1990's in London when the IRA planted bombs in rubbish bins, the response from the UK govt was to fill them up with concrete. I remember several times walking down Charing Cross road holding on to my used chocolate bar wrappers in search of a place to dump them!

An excellent idea of course, the next step would be persuading people to use them. Let's hope that there are MORE than there used to be, as a previous poster said, the amount of rubbish I carry around either in my pockets or handbag has to be seen to be believed. This is due to the dearth of bins wherever I am. Maybe I am just unlucky? :o

Is it against the law to put suspicious looking (but harmless) packages in the waste bins?....carefully placed so that they would be sure of being spotted?....alarm clocks with wires coming out connected to cardboard tubes painted red?.......

If it is not (against the law) it should be.

Absolutely no difference than making a hoax call.

Maybe me, but I had you down for someone with a bit more grey matter under your hat. :o

I asked a question so I guess you are right...this means that I am mentally lacking...really smart people never ask questions do they?

Are you suggesting that if someone discards an alarm clock that they should be charged with a crime?...I mean someone who just genuinely throws away a clock and has no political statement to be made? What about this: should it be against the law to put 5 kilograms of clay in a plain cardboard box with the wording "This is not a bomb." on it and leaving it somewhere?

How long do you think that these bins will stay transparent?...how long before they get smeared with caca colored goo of aged encrustment?...

Good point, but anyhow how does being transparent stop someone dropping a coke can size bomb wrapped in a paper bag into the bin? Who is going to suspect that it is a bomb except for the poor scavenger who picks it out?

In London, and most UK cities, during the IRA's bombing campaign of the '70's and '80's the only solution was to remove rubbish bins altogether. Given the amount of garbage generated in Bangkok daily this solution would be most unpleasant indeed or maybe, given that most floks don't use them anyway, nobody would notice.

Since the bomb attacks over the new year have there been any actual bombs planted/dicovered? Not suspect packages but actual functional bombs? We may find, hopefully, that the attacks were just the work of a bunch of disgruntled Thaksinettes trying to stir up trouble. But of course we cannot ever contemplate assuming that at this early stage.

I seem to remember reading in the Bangkok Post that the police were quoted as saying they knew who the bombers were. Why no arrests then or did I misread the article?

today at santichiprakarn park, they had policemen posted at each garbage bin.

Have to create employment somehow :o

could be a good passtime for volunteer cops, sentry duty on litter bins :D

It was really funny because the policeman examined my empty water bottle as I was about to deposit it in the garbage bin.

Correction:  santichiprakarn park is incorrect, the correct name is Santichaiprakarn Park on Pra Athit near KSR

The more you say the bigger the hole that you dig for yourself.

Now you are asking "Are you suggesting that if someone discards an alarm clock that they should be charged with a crime?..."

You did not initially just say an alarm clock (and well you know it)

You had previously suggested "....carefully placed so that they would be sure of being spotted?....alarm clocks with wires coming out connected to cardboard tubes painted red?..."

Your remarks are going from stupid to stupider :D

Thanks for the help. I didn't think that my comment was central to anything but I'm glad your showing me how important it really is. I'd be glad to dig my hole deeper but I need your help with this. I can see from your post that you have some issue with how I have described (or not) the placement of the alarm clock in the transparent bin. If you can clarify what your issue is I will be glad to grab my shovel and start digging.
