Gold fish dying off

BEVUP

Recommended Posts

Hello all

I can't work out why my fish are dying off one by one

Started with 11 & had them for a couple of yrs, now have 5 since I just discovered this afternoon 1 was belly up ( all ok most of the day )

The water tests all ok (so I think) "0" for everything Ammonia - Nitrate - Nitrites

Pond is 1 m3 of water & I did a 1/3 rd of water change a Mth or so ago

Fish seem to look ok

Give them a small amount of food every 3 days (since it's cold )

Any Thoughts20171203_162318.thumb.jpg.05f4d58826f1b18a794e3926fcd3146b.jpg

I am no expert, but testing zero for everything is worrying, are your test strips in date? How's the pH? (extremes of pH can cause odd readings of other levels).

Do you have any filtration? Air bubbler?

How long did you let your change water sit (assuming it came from the domestic supply)? Fish really don't like chlorine and the damage can take a while to appear.

Small ponds can be a nightmare, too little water to balance easily and things can go wrong really fast.

Our much bigger (15,000 Litre) koi pond (really it's a pond with koi and guppies rather than a formal koi pond) hasn't had a water change in over a year, fish and plants happy, 2 x 1.2m concrete rings with water hyacinth as bio filters, 150W of UV keeps the green down. I admit to not testing the water on any sort of regular basis if everything looks happy. Our top-up water comes from the river via a sediment filter so no issue with chlorine and the like.

I actually have the test kits not strips (thats how I found Ammonia in the pool )

The fountain is the airrator

PH ok ( a week ago )

No filtration but I have a wet & dry vacume I use once & a while

I also check town water

Well now I have 7 (they were hiding )

So it looks like the 1 that was belly up for a bit came good

So from 11 to 7 in a mth

Could be old age or a cat shocking them during the knight (but they dont sleep near the edge )

Maybe over feeding as when we do give a small portion of food every 3 days it takes them a while to eat (not like summer where it would be gone in a minute )

Wow Crossy!

Is your UV not  a bit to much? I read everywhere that UV should be around 2-3Watt/M3 of water. I recently installed UV filters on my pond from 20M3. Total 72Watt. The water starts to get clear very slow now. But we have also an incredible amount of rain, what also helps to make the water clear.

Maybe should open a new topic on "how to get water clear in your pond" I pump around with around 40m3/hour. The half of this water goes through UV filters and mechanical filters, the other half only mechanical. There is an overflow what is now not filtered at all, but I will ad an additional filter to filter the overflow also.

I am now in a doubt to ad an additional UV lamp from 40Watt (7.000 Baht) or an air blower from around 400Watt, (include diffusers around 10.000 Baht). Since I start playing around with my pond our electrical bill has multiplied several times....

And although the water is still not very clear, the amount of fish is increasing also incredible fast....

Arjen.

It is important to renew the UV lamp every year, also take apart and clean the protective

inner glass tube,I Only have a 30 W UV on my pond, and the water is crystal,I did install

shade cloth over the pond, what causes algae is over feeding and of course  the Sun.

To the OP, I see you have pot plants around the pool.I wonder if when you water them

that water from the pot plants with maybe fertilizer in enters the pool, its very strange

that everything tests 0,
