THE Cabinet yesterday acknowledged Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s assignment of Deputy PM Somkid Jatusripitak to oversee the activities of 11 economic agencies, following the recent reshuffle of the Cabinet.

The 11 agencies are the Finance Ministry, the Foreign Ministry, the Tourism and Sports Ministry, the Transport Ministry, the Commerce Ministry, the Science and Technology Ministry, the Industry Ministry, the National Economic and Social Development Board, the Board of Investment, the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives.

Meanwhile, deputy PM Prajin Juntong has been assigned to oversee the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, the Energy Ministry, Education Ministry, Justice Ministry, National Research Council of Thailand, The Office for National Education Standards and Quality Assessment (Public Organisation), Office of Knowledge Management and Development (Public Organisation) and the Thailand Research Fund.

The premier also assigned PM Office minister Korbsak Pootrakool to oversee the Office of SMEs Promotion, and assigned another PM Office minister Suwapan Tanyuvardhana to oversee MCOT and the National Health Commission Office.

Yesterday new Commerce Minister Sontirat Sontijirawong delivered his policies to senior ministry officials, saying that the ministry would focus on strenghtening the grass root economy, seeking new markets for agricultural produce and keep growth momentum of the export sector.

To improve the grass root economy, Sontirat said that the ministry will focus on the 11 million low-income people registered with the Finance Minister by providing them with training to boost their income.

The ministry will also collaborate with small and community outlets to support their sales of local products.

The ministry will promote small and medium-sized enterprises in the export of their products and distribution through online platform.

He added that the ministry will have to find new markets for agriculture produce in support of Thai farmers.

And he gets 500,000 baht for each portfolio! That’s 5.5 million a month! No wonder there are a lot of other Military who are pissed cos they ain’t getting a piece of the pie! Anyone think corruption was being tackled in Thailand... Dream on! Just as any election will be delayed further and further!

And the lucky Ministry - the one that isn't going to be 'overseen' - is the Interior Ministry. Assuming we can take it that 'overseen' means likely to see urgent improvement, that would imply that Prayut sees no need for improvement within the Interior Ministry.

BUT, and this is the bit that has me gob-smacked . . .

. . . the one aspect of Thai governance that is most featured (on T-V threads, at least) as seriously lacking in performance is the Royal Thai Police Force . . . lacking in its delivery on crime-reduction, road traffic control and corruption issues, to mention just 3. And which Ministry is responsible for Thailand's invisible police force?

Yes, you got it in one . . . it's the Interior Ministry, which just happens to be run by a close confident of Prayut, Anupong Paochinda. Now, there's an interesting kettle of fish: what is it about the IM that makes him so untouchable? For him to be sat on the world's most ineffective police force, apparently without even a slap on the wrist, tells me that something bad is going on.

And, would you believe it . . . what's that in Prawit's hands for this white-suited photo-call? If I'm not mistaken, it's his triple-size brandy glass. Thailand needs more of his sort, or at least the Sang Som Thai Brandy distillery does.

Office of Knowledge Management and Development

Starting from zero knowledge, give me 'Management' anytime. For the poor dudes in 'Development', there can be only one way from there . . . unless the 'Thailand' factor scores another Nil Pointes.
