Flooding in south lets up in some areas but persists in others

TRANG, 5th December 2017 (NNT) – A reprieve in rainfall has brought hope that the southern flood situation will soon be resolved but drainage in areas such as Trang province has continued to be slow due to high tides.

Waters in flooded areas of Trang have crept up slightly due to a rise in the ocean tide, spreading floodwaters into more residential areas. The waters surged into areas of Muang district on 3rd December after portions of the city’s earthen dyke were eroded. Wat Chaeng School has remained closed after being submerged in over 80 centimeters of water, while residents in the area have taken refuge at Wat Chaeng’s main temple.

After another nearby school was shut over rising waters, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office of district 18 in Phuket dispatched water pumping trucks to Trang to assist in alleviating the situation.

Meanwhile, inundation has completely subsided in Hat Yai district of Songkhla province and residents have been returning to their daily routine with the local public health office now inspecting the living conditions of citizens who were isolated in flooded communities from November 25.

In Pattani province, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office District 12 of Songkhla has installed a large water pump at Dechanuchit Bridge, adding to four existing pumps. A break in the rain over the past few days has provided the opportunity for flood waters in Muang Pattani district to be dispersed.

The Agriculture Office of Yala province meanwhile reported that 9,203 rai of farmland has been completely destroyed by flooding. The figure is expected to jump to 10,971 rai once the current bout of flooding subsides. The office is requesting assistance funds due to the situation.
