Leatherback sea turtles disappearing from Thai waters

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plants Conservation has ordered authorities at marine national parks to tighten crackdown on illegal fishing activities to protect endangered marine species, particularly leatherback sea turtles.

 

The order by the department’s director-general Tunya Netithammakul came as a survey by park authorities during the past four years from 2013-2017 showed  leatherback sea turtles didn’t come ashore on sandy beach to nest and lay eggs.

 

This was very unusual as in the past, dozens of leatherback nests were found on Phuket and Phangnga beaches. Regular nesting grounds for the leatherback turtles are Khao Lampi – Hat Thai Mueang marine national park in Phangnga and Sirinat marine national park in Phuket.

You cannot blame them,with all the shit ,plastics,and other

rubbish in the sea,tour boats and ,fishermen.

The Leatherbacks have been around for Millions of years,

but the way things are going they won't be around much longer.

Too many people, boats,  jet skis, garbage, overfishing, artificial lighting all contribute towards the demise of these wonderful creatures.

Everything is ok to make a fast buck , " protected species " ? who cares ? The sea full of rubbish ? It's not my fault they say ... ! Always blame somebody else for what is wrong ...THAT'S Human nature .

Why is anyone surprised?  They are obviously ingesting millions of cigarette butts.  That must be what is killing them off.  The flow of sewage to the Gulf of Thailand is endless but the government does not see this as a problem.  If we can just get the smokers off the beaches all will be solved!!!

The sea is getting full of plastic, especially plastic bags that turtles try to eat, they have enough  problems at sea without their egg-laying grounds being destroyed by an untrammelled tourist industry.

 

However ordering a clampdown on illegal fishing is a dubious response - firstly because it doesn't appear to address the problem and secondly as it shows up the exisitng shortcomings of the DNP and other authorities involved.

Fishing is already illegal, so telling someone to do something about it implies that up till now it has been allowed to go unchecked - what kind of policy was that!?!?!?!

I guess it´s time to implement one of thoose extremely popular 100K fines for people that disturbes the endangered turtles. 
Here it could actually be in order with that amount.

The size of the fine is secondary....it is prevention that is primarily required...that requires men on the ground....and that they are paid more than a pittance

nothing new here, no regard for anything else but the almighty baht plus the fact that they are edible for some people, easy way to make some quick money. That and the conditions of the beaches/water doesnt help either, unfortunately animal preservation and Thailand dont mix

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Humans are acting like a toxic parasite ( parasites kill the host ) on the planet and I think humanity is setting itself up for a major culling.

plastic bags floating in the ocean resemble jellyfish to the turtle which are part of the turtles food chain.
