Here's the honest taxi driver story - as promised....

For those who think that stories about bad taxi drivers are invariably followed by ones about honest cabbies - here it is...

For the latest example of goodness we go to Pattaya where Tnews found 51 year old Chao Asar who hails from the Na Jomtien area.

He told the media that he picked up a Russian tourist around 3 am at Bali Hai in South Pattaya on Wednesday morning and took him to the Ambassador Hotel in Na Jomtien.

The tourist sat in the front passenger seat for the comfortable ride over the hill.

He charged 400 baht for the service and the tourist arrived safely at his destination. Chao then headed home for the night.

However, at 1pm when Chao was meticulously cleaning his cab ready for another day of honest toil he espied an expensive phone that had dropped down by the left of the front seat.

Inside the protective cover was a startling discovery - 100 US dollars.

Acting on a hunch Chao checked the phone and discovered many missed calls so he called back and found out it belonged to the tourist who was his last customer from the previous night.

He then went to the Ambassador where the manager acted as witness and smiling tourist and phone and cash were happily reunited.

He was paid 1,000 reward for his trouble and honesty.

Chao said modestly: "I was happy to help - all taxi drivers and baht bus drivers who find things like this should do the same. It is good for the resort and the country and will mean visitors to Thailand will come back again".

I thought this was a good news story, until I saw the extortionate fare he was charged !

Probably dropping him off there a few hours previous might have been a give away.

Honest ???

400 THB for a few kilometers ???

Bali Jai Pier to Na Jom Tien@0300hrs???  He's lucky it was only 400 baht, they usually start at 600 baht and negotiate down to 400 baht...........you'll never get a cab that will put on the meter.

Or the Russian just handed the phone (that he answered when the cab driver called back) to the Thai hotel staff perhaps?

Also, "TAXI" is one of the few words that is spelled and pronounced the same all over the world.
