Seniors trapped as Phang Nga villages slammed by run-off

By The Nation

Two villages in Phang Nga were walloped by mountain run-off early in the overnight hours on Friday, a local politician said.

Wiriya Sanglekha, a member of Tambon Lamphee Administrative Organisation, said Moo 5 and Moo 6 villages in his tambon in Thai Mueang district were hit by heavy run-off early in the morning.

He said the fast-moving water damaged motorcycles, cars and valuables on the first floor of houses as villagers had no time to move things upstairs.

Older people were trapped inside several houses, and so he coordinated with the provincial administration to send urgent help.

Wiriya said rains were still falling and the floodwaters were rising in the morning.

The Phang Nga water resources office reported that 118.5 millimetres of rain fell in the district over the previous 12 hours.
