Irrawaddy dolphin now classified as “endangered” species by IUCN

 

 

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has recently raised the status of Irrawaddy dolphin from “vulnerable” to “endangered” as its numbers have fallen by half over the past six decades, according to The Irrawaddy Online on Friday.

 

Despite the change of the status, the Wildlife Conservation Society in Myanmar claimed that the population of the dolphins has risen slightly over the last three years.

 

According to the WCS, there are currently at least 69 dolphins in the river between Bhamo and Mandalay cities, in addition to population of approximately 80-100 left in stretches of the Mekong river in Cambodia and Laos and in Mahakham in Indonesia.
