I have a brand new Passport issued as my old one was expiring. My Thai Bike/Car driving License shows my old passport details. For obvious reasons like an Insurance claim do I need to update my existing driving license to show the new passport numbers on the license as these are different now?

Officially you have to update the details, it has no consequences though if you don't. I know I have never updated the details.

You will more then likely not get it done even if you ask.

My Thai Driving licence's says that I am 10 years younger than I am. Their mistake when first issued some 15 years ago. Will they change it NO said it was to much bother TIT.

Thank you for reply's. I will try and update my Licence details with new passport number details and see how it goes. Just for peace of mind with insurance especially. Cheers

Up to you, but totally unnecessary.

I am getting a new passport nearly every year as i am travelling a lot. I noticed only few year ago that my passport number was in the Thai driving licence when one day i went to a bank to open a new account and they were asking a copy a my passport and Thai DL but notice that the passport number was not matching... and they asked me to get my DL updated first. I believe this is totaly unusual but sometime if you can provide everything they might ask, the bank will still request something that you don't have...
I then went to DL office. I had to provide a certificate of residence from immigration (1 for each licence) and it took just few minutes to get new DL's updated.
Since, i am updating my DL's everytime as soon as i get new passport just in case. It doesn't take much time. Only the matters to get the certificate of residence from immigration and going to the DL office. For my case, this is in Phuket and it is probably different in others regions
I frankly don't believe it is necessary but i like things in order...

My experience also. Since different banks will ask for as much photo ID as you can provide and despite there being no specific reference to the Thai DL being required for a non-Thai let alone having the same (passport) ID number as the applicants passport, it is better to update the Thai DL as soon as convenient.

If you don't plan on doing any extra-curricular banking or financial business, no need to update it... but if it isn't a huge bureaucratic issue where one lives, then may as well do it, just in case.

Just had my DL updated in K Samui when I got my new passport. Cost 55 baht as it is a new card with new photo. They require a work permit or a confirmation of address to do it. Very simple took about 30 minutes.

With respect.....just because a person hasn't done what you say should be done.....doesn't mean there will be no consquences for not doing it.

My passport details were updated when I renewed both my licences. Had to pay extra for them to tap on a keyboard for 2 mins more than normal :)

You got ripped off.

When renewing here in Chon Buri, you get a residential certificate first with you current passport number on it,  one of the required paperwork is a front copy of your passport which is your current number. That paperwork gets passed on and on until your new card is issue with your current passport number.

Prior to that I had the old number on my driver license,  here no one has a idea what is old and new unless you point it out. When it comes to banking etc.. that requires a I.D. I provide them with my copy of Passport which has been reduced, in color to the size of a credit card, never had a problem nor question what the old or new number!

I tried when I got a new passport but the transportation dept just told me to wait until my license expires

I didn't get ripped off, as I'm not in Chon Buri and every office has its own set of "rules/requirements". They noticed my passport number was different when they entered my details on the computer. Then there was an "admin fee" to process the change :) It was only 50 baht...

You are right every office is different although it was only 50 baht " admin fee "  pretty fancy word to cover up the rip off, sure there are better words but that is all I could come for with.  I guess he/she needed it for her lunch bowl of noodles on you?:stoner:

Actually it is not needed to update the passport number in the drivers license.

The keep track of it. When you transfer your visa from one passport to another the previsious passport number is also put in as reference.

This gave that to me as reason when they refused to change drivers license.

Yes, just go to the Land Transport Office with your DLs and new passport, and a proof of address, which can for example be a letter from Immigration or a Yellow House Book. Need to be a day when the renew DLs, as some Land Transport Offices don't do that every day.

You also need to update you bank account(s) with your new passport number; i.e. go to your home branch with your bankbook(s) and new passport. Some banks, for example Bangkok Bank, will issue brand new bankbooks for you, as your passport number is printed inside the bankbook at the signature page. If your passport number in the bankbook don't fit with your showed passport for identification, you may not be able to withdraw money (talk from experience). If you have several bankbooks, bring all of them; even a bank not printing the number inside, like SCB, may only update some of the bankbooks, if you don't bring all (also by personal experience).

Be careful with such statements.
I was told that the licence becomes invalid immediately if the passport number changes.
By the way, when I sent a parcel at the post office, I had presented my driving licence with the old passport number: the post office did not accept it. Somewhere in the background the old passport number was saved as invalid.

Only a certificate of residence (per DL, although they would have accepted a photocopy in Pattaya), a bit of time to hang in queues, and you're all done. IMHO, it's never really wrong to do things properly...

You paid 200 baht for a 'residential certificate' so you got ripped off more, albeit by a different government department.

Good game isn't it?

Why? Has the 'admin fee' charged by Jomtien IO for the (officially free)  'residential certificate' changed?

As original Op and the reply's to my original question it does not seem there is a big issue holding a licence with an outdated Passport and Numbers being different on your Driving Licence. Cop the fee whatever when you get caught out by the Gov. My main concern is insurance and what happens if it is picked up that your driving licence does not correspond with the numbers shown on your current passport. Can the insurance company use this to invalidate an insurance claim? Trying to keep this thread on topic. Thanks guys

That question has been answered already.

There are no legal consequences, no effect on insurance.
