Cool weather and popular attractions greet tourists across Thailand

MANY PROVINCES have prepared for an influx of tourists during the long holiday season and many tourists have already experienced some cool weather in their travels.

 

PHANG NGA 

 

Officials at Ao Phang Nga National Park, a top destination in the southern part of Thailand have prepared several facilities for tourists. They have installed pontoons in the sea to mark where boats can and cannot moor. Park officials said they have also set aside areas where people can swim and tie up canoes. These measures are also designed ensure the safety of tourists. 

 

Officials on Friday placed 200 metres of pontoons for mooring longtail boats and canoes. 

 

KHON KAEN 

 

Police in the northeastern province launched a campaign on Friday night to clear up drug abuse at six large entertainment venues in the downtown area. 

They also gave urine tests to some tourists but had not yet found any drug addicts. Khon Kaen Governor Somsak Changtrakool, who led the campaign, said the authorities want to ensure that nobody under 20 visited pubs. They also aim to prevent human trafficking.

 

NONG KHAI

 

A lot of tourists have flocked to Nong Khai province, which shares a border with Laos, to see the spectacular sea of fog over the Mekong River. About 300 tourists visited Phu Huay Isan yesterday morning to see the fog and experience cool temperatures of 17 degrees Celsius. They also witnessed a beautiful sunrise. Tourists can also see fog at Phu Lone, Phu Nong and Phu Phaduk. 

 

SAKON NAKHON 

 

Cold weather has meant that lotus flowers have not blossomed at Lotus Memorial Park at Nong Han Lake in Sakon Nakhon. This is the largest lotus park in Thailand, with about 100 different strains of the plant. Temperatures have plunged to about 7 degrees Celsius over the past few days. Wilaisak Kingkham, vice president of Kasetsart University Chalermphrakiat Sakonnakhon Campus, said there are only a few lotus blossoms in the afternoon when there is sunlight. 

 

It is expected to take two or three days before the lotus flowers blossom – if the weather warms up a bit. The best season to see lotus blossoming is from mid-January to March, according to Wilaisak. 

 

PHICHIT

 

Cold weather has slowed the growth of mushrooms in the northern province, affecting the income of farmers in the district of Pho Prathap Chang. The temperature dropped to 11 degrees then went up to 14 yesterday, but mushrooms grow better in humid and warm weather. However, mushrooms stay fresh and can be kept longer in cool weather. 

 

UTTARADIT

 

Tourists flocked to Phu Lae Lao at Ban Khok district of this northern province, which shares a border with Laos. The morning temperature was as low as 4 degrees and some tourists took in the fresh air and made sightseeing trips to the pine forest.

 

MAE HONG SON

 

Over the past few days, the mercury plunged to minus 1 degrees, causing frost in some hillside areas. In the downtown, the temperature rose to 8 or 9 degrees on Saturday morning. Not many tourists are currently visiting Mae Hong Son but large numbers of them are expected after Christmas. Among the tourists, about 60 per cent are Thais. About 700,000 tourists visited the province last year and the numbers are not expected to change much this year. However, officials see potential as there are many scenic places that few people know about. 

 

YASOTHON

 

The Christian community in this northeastern province started to celebrate the Christmas season yesterday. Catholics in Ban Songyae of Thai Charoen district organised a Christmas Star Parade.

For me, I'd say I need more clothes! I'm cold right now along with my wife and son. The temperature is 16C in Udon.

I hate the cold weather, I never want to experience it again. It's never too hot for me.

You´re exactly like me! I am deep frozen. Only time it´s a little bit too hot, is when it hasn´t been raining for very long time and about over 37 degree.

I like the temperature right now. 10 am in Chiang Mai and I've got the window open so I can enjoy the cool temperature. I don't like being cold, but this is not cold at all. The locals would disagree though, as they are wearing ski jackets .

 

 

Good to see Buriram is not expecting an influx. It is so nice here at the moment with a goodly, cool northerly breeze and bright sunshine.

I'm in Chiang Mai and haven't forced myself out of bed yet because it's too cold outside my blanket.

I'm in the same province, best time of the year.

Dec-Feb get things done, no humidity, great for m/c trips or working on projects. Not pouring with sweat doing nothing.

Love this daytime weather.

17 sounds so delightful. Be thankful that you are not experiencing this (Canada). 

But of course it is all relative. Thais are not accustomed to a chill. My gf in Thailand has a coat on her dog and cats. And she is in bed but can not sleep because her hands are cold. 

What bunch of wimps complainING about so called cold weather. Get a life. It is not cold only cool.

I always hated the cold weather back in the UK. Just because you like it doesn't mean everyone does.

Having been in Thailand twenty years permanently, I'm acclimatised to the warm weather.

I went across Africa in a truck and remember in the Sahara the temperature was 40C in the shade. I really enjoyed that.

Not everyone has the same attitude to hot or cold weather.

Agreed...it is not cold (Sisaket) and it used to be much cooler than that, for much longer periods, when Thailand still had its 4 months long dry and cool season.

 

Just a decade ago, I turned the aircon off early november until February, got the heavy jackets and socks out of their closet, and the villagers were piling dry wood in order to warm themselves around camp fires every morning, for about 2 months!

 

This has all but disappeared...I haven't used my heavy jacket, not to mention the very warm duvet I had specially ordered to get through these usually cool months, for many years now.

 

This year, we have had about 5 days of a strong northernly wind, which is not enough to call that a winter.

 

Let's hope for more!

I find the cool weather energizes, you need to move around and warm up!

Can actually get the odd job done outside, without getting exhausted and dehydrated.

Sleep better too.....

Only negative is I fail to dress suitably for a ride on the scooter and am arriving somewhat chilled.

Great weather in Chiang Rai. Nights are cool to cold but the days are to die for. Best 2 months of the year. 

Drove from Phuket to Korat last week and was shocked by the 10 C temp here......that is 50 F old school. Now it is back up to the balmy days. Merry Christmas everyone.

We live in Michigan right now and my wife is freezing every day. She would welcome the Thailand weather right now I’m sure.

Just think of those nasty insects it will kill off, thats if it stays long enough

They need time to find the drug addicts & I believe there is a man who has just the timepiece......

After living over 25 years in FL, I think that has ruined warm weather locations for me. It's 38 (F) where I live now and I love the weather here. I was a snowbird for 10 years and sold both places and moved to the middle. Maybe if I like Asian women and cool weather, Japan might be a better fit.

So I guess Thailand does get cold, by anyone's definition.

Oh <deleted> hell!  Did they really have to string all these dumb-ass barriers in one of the most pristine natural areas left in Ao Nang?  Why don't they just pave the whole place now and get it over with quickly.  They can't even keep the rubbish and stink off their streets.  What a complete cock up that place is.
