retirement visa extention

hi can someone assist me on there knowledge of a retirement visa ,i have a friend whose retirement visa runs out on the 20th of feb but he is flying to uk on the 15th feb and will return on the 1st of march ,can he renew as an extention when returns to thailand even though he will be out of the country when the visa runs out...if so what are all his options,,i once heard about an extention or if he does a 90 day check in prior to going even though not need untill 3rd march. thanks

He must extend prior to permitted entry running out - he can do up to 30 days early everywhere and up to 45 days early at some so should not be an issue as long as he can meet the financials - he would also need to obtain a re-entry permit once he gets the extension of stay.
