PM says an “outsider” prime minister will help pre-empt coup

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said that having a non-elected individual to become the next prime minister as stipulated in the Constitution will help pre-empt a coup in case political parties cannot settle among themselves who should be the prime minister after the next election.

As for himself, he told the media at a get-together at the Government House on Thursday (Jan 4) that he had not been approached by any party to be the “outsider” prime minister (prime minister who is not an MP).

Asked about the issue of “outsider” prime minister, he said the media should know the answer better, adding that he would prefer not to talk about it as no one knew what would happen in the future.

Of course! Having a a particular individual as non elected PM should allow to avoid the same person doing a coup! :cheesy:

The Thai 'Forest Gump', run Forest run.

Sounds sensible! Then an eventual election suddenly became totally worthless. :cheesy:

What the hell does he know about unelected prime ministers?

I do. The military and unelected elites will rule this country for at least the next two decades.

Well I know and my dog says he knows and I am not going to argue with a Dog I do not own, says me, but then i unlike you and Steven 100, I do not have to live with this S>>>

pre-planning for the next coup ? how sick is that ?

To be fair, he has a lot of experience in this profession...

Power has intoxicated this man and he now think he can even walk on water. An outside prime minister especially him will pre-empt coup and also set up events similar to 1972 popular uprising.

I really hope he will participate in the election as a party member whichever it is as I want to see him humiliated by the beating he will get in the poll just like previous coup leaders that entered politics. This man got to eat humble pie before he admit that he is a failure and an incompetent leader. Only propped up by his draconian laws and extra judiciary intimidation.

an "outsider" could only be a politician who used to be a soldier.

oh shit, no.jpg

That is exactly what was done during the 2011 election campaign - remember the ambivalent advice from the then head of the army (a certain General Prayut) that the people should choose a "good government' - advice followed by repeated assurances that he would not stage a coup.

Was it ever a particular secret that he was minded or was the likely candidate for a coup installed, long term, premiership to squash the development of democratic government in this country?

It may explain why the Reds were so keen to push Abhisit to the polls in 2010, before he could become head of the army. The last coup was long in the planning, this talk of "outside Prime Ministers" is just another stage in the process.

And yes it is sick, if you regard the cynical, planned, methodical institutionalisation of a process to strip the Thai people of the right to ever again select their own government as sick.

To a degree I think he has been approached.

"Former charter drafter Paiboon Nititawan recently made headlines after his decision to create the People’s Reform Party, which would pave the way for Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha to become premier again." http://www.nationmultimedia.com/politics/Paiboon-promises-to-resolve-political-deadlock-wit-30292950.html

"While Prayut is unable to become an MP candidate as he did not resign from premiership by 90 days after the new charter’s promulgation, he could be nominated by political parties or by a majority vote of the combined Upper and Lower Houses as stipulated in the charter" http://www.nationmultimedia.com/detail/politics/30335387

He's not wearing his hat because it's in ring.

All the Generals know there'll never be another coup by that is accepted by the Thai people. Things changed significantly just recently.... all adds up to no more coups. Their last best hope - rigged constitution that overrides democracy, it won't last either. Like it or not, Thaksin has won.

He speaks about himself in 3rd person mode very well lately :)

Did I miss something?  There hasn't been a Thai parliament since he dissolved it post-May 2014 takeover, hence no MPs.  So isn't this "outsider" label a moot point?  Maybe Little P means any former MP since he's doing everything possible to castrate the established political parties to ensure he, or his designee, will win the upcoming February 30th election.

Well, that time is probably coming. The fat lady has yet to sing. When she does, what will be the song? Will "Run Rabbit Run" and "I'm Leaving on a Jet Plane" be amongst the repertoire?

Now that’s a great point, but really begs the question as to what does anyone know about unelected prime ministers.

the answer, though, to your question, is that Prayut knows more than anyone about them, because he’s making it all up as he goes.

I take it that political parties in Thailand don’t have nominated leaders prior to an election then... contrary to my seemingly obsolete view that the public, via election, decide on the prime minister

Quite possibly.

An interim 200-member junta-appointed National Legislative Assembly that included about 100 army officers and a dozen of police officers had its first meeting on August 7, 2014.

The NLA then on August 21, 2014 appointed the only nominee as Prime Minister - junta Chief Prayut.

You mean as in Thai, Lun Labbit, Lun Labbit, Lun Lun Lun!

Sometimes  I gotta wonder if Mr. P or the  POTUS enjoys intrigue  the most.

Does this mean the PM does not feel the Thai people are smart enough to select who they want to lead their country? What is a non-elected leader called?
