Get Ready: 400,000 Chinese tourists to descend on Thailand over New Year holidays

Where did all the High Quality Tourists go ???

Shops at MBK and Siam Square are having the lowest revenue in years. I went to MBK myself yesterday afternoon, it was almost empty. I saw a handful of western foreigners. One of my wife's customers told me that many shops won't be able to pay the next months rent as the revenue is 35-40% of last year what was the worst year in the MBK history. They're not waiting for Chinese tourists as they won't buy a thing.

One of my wife's Siam Square customers said that this year they are having about 3 western foreigners in their shop per week spending almost nothing while the years before they had at least 20 western foreigners per day spending real good on luxury purchases. Chinese tourists are not even welcome as they are too loud, making a mess and won't spend a Baht as they can buy replicas in China for less than 1% of the price what originals costs.

Never seen MBK almost empty even in low season..

Note to self, don't go Chiang Mai next month.

....shopping malls.   I don't know what it is the Chinese tourists buy, but they fill their trolleys and travel in packs.    Good for business I guess.

Probably because it's much cheaper in Hong Kong.   I didn't go there for the shopping, but ended up buying a couple of items at 1/3 the cost I've paid in Chiang Mai.

If you have your eyes closed, you can't see.

Go there now, take a look (open your eyes) and ask any shop owner about the activity nowadays !!!

I went mid day to buy a phone charger and to the food court. Lots of new year sales and all floors packed!
Who knows maybe the fire alarms went off and mbk was evacuated just before you arrived for it to be near empty as you suggested

Don't they go home to their families like Thai people during New year and Songkran?

That's exactly what they do:

Ethnic Chinese make up 10 to 14 percent of the population of Thailand, or around than 6 million to 9 million people (the range in numbers has to do with how mixed-blood Thai Chinese are counted).
