PHUKET: Inmates will have to wait at least another year and a half before respite can be delivered from the current conditions at the notoriously overcrowded Phuket Provincial Prison.

The new facility under construction on 108 rai at Baan Bangjo in Srisoonthorn was originally slated by contract for completion by July 14 this year – ironically, Bastille Day – but the project got off to a late start while the earthworks for the site were completed.

Construction is making good progress now, Prison Director Somkhit Khammang said this week, though admitting that prisoners would not likely be moved into the new facility until about June 2019, at the earliest.

Guess Thailand is doing something wrong, although in my homecountry they also have prison problems... the problem there is that there are not enough inmates. First they offered neighboring countries to take over some of their inmates but now they are forced to start closing prisons.

Maybe time to look over the borders and copy the practices of the more succesful west european countries.

Apparently, crime rates are not rising on Phuket.  Perhaps it's just the incarceration rates that are rising.  :cheesy:
