PHUKET: Doctors have played down fears that 26-year-old Chinese tourist Kwang Pei Hong, who remains in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Vachira Phuket Hospital, will need to undergo facial cosmetic surgery for burns sustained in the tour boat fireball off Phi Phi Island on Sunday (Jan 14).

The news comes via a Ministry of Tourism & Sports (MoTS) Phuket office update revealed to The Phuket News today (Jan 16) following the tour speedboat King Poseidon 959erupting into flames from a suspected leaky fuel line while hovering offshore from Viking Cave just after 11am, injuring dozens of the 31 people on board.

Ms Kwang suffered extensive burns to her face, arms and both legs – with burns to more than 30% of her body – in the fire. However, she is conscious and can speak, but still in pain, said the MoTS report.

The Thais will not only be desperate to sweep this one under the carpet, again, but will also be desperately playing pass the buck on the very considerable medical expenses. It always works with the Europeans who soon realise that better health care is available back in Sweden/U.K./Germany/France, etc. and is free at the point of delivery. So they get home soonest. The Chinese are a different kettle of fish. They will fight for every last penny and they have a consul with teeth who will fight on their behalf.

You can almost guarantee the boat owner and tour operator will have either no or the absolute bare minimum insurance cover.

It has already been confirmed in the original report that both have insurance cover but even so it can almost be guaranteed that someone here will assert it to not be the case.

Insurance cover in Thailand often has meagre stipulated limits. Will the insurance cover stretch to several tens of millions of baht for the multiple victims??

On my 125 cc motorbike, I have insurance covering 3rd party injury to the value of 30,000 Baht. I don't think that would cover multiple skin graft operations on multiple victims.

This was not a motorbike accident covered by the minimum compulsory insurance so what is the relevance of that remark?

Figures were mentioned in the report about the insurance and sums insured were in the millions, can't remember how many and if you want to know you'll have to search yourself.
