As mentioned in another thread I take one tab of feburic daily. It aint cheap!

Available only in my hospital, it used to cost me 166 baht each tab. Now it is government approved, and, with discounts, my cost is down to 115 baht. I've tried to source it outside the hospital without success.

My first question -  does anyone know a cheaper source in Thailand?

Secondly, online enquiries to companies in India, where many generic drugs are manufactured at very cheap prices, elicited this response:

Hello,

Thanks for contacting us.
Yes, we have Fabulas in stock.
Kindly note the details below for Fabulas Medicine -
  • Brand name - Fabulas
  • Generic - Febuxostat
  • Strength - 80 Mg
  • Price - USD $ 8 for 30 tablets
  • Form - Tablets
  • Manufactured by - Intas.
Kindly tell us the how many boxes you want to buy?
Shipment Process:-  Yes we can ship to Thailand. We use E.M.S- express mail service for shipping of goods. Delivery time required 5 to 12 days. Door step delivery at your place.

The cost is a fraction of what I'm now paying, but questions arise about quality, legality, prescriptions, delivery methods, customs duty and reliability.
Anyone bought items this way?

Let's be clear:  what you are proposing to do is illegal.

However, since they are using EMS the chances of being caught are very low.  Postal items worth less than 1,500 baht are usually let in duty free.

I'm actually proposing to buy from any on-line supplier or pharmacy inside Thailand who sells this medicine cheaper than the hospital I'm currently forced to use.

It's a bit disappointing no one has a lead on this.

However, I thank you for your input about sourcing it from India. I contacted them basically to check prices with the vague idea a trip there could be profitable. They sent a return email with the unsought proposal to post them to me. My query hadn't gone beyond a price check.

I asked here for input about legality, Customs duty, etc. already knowing the likely answers. I was never seriously proposing to get delivery this way unless it was legal to do so.  I wouldn't risk my visa status.

I am amazed at how low their prices are in comparison.

The only brand of this in Thailand is Feburic which is an imported international brand and hence very expensive, and it is a prescription only drug so usually available only in Thailand.

If the price you mention is from a government hospital, you are nto going to get it for less within Thailand. If it is from a private hospital then possible you could get it for less at a government hospital but it will still be costly.

There are no generic equivalents available in Thailand at this time.

As regards importing meds from abroad it is not legal to do so without an import license from the FDA, which you cannot get. However in practice customs will usually allow in small quantities of non prescription drugs (drugs not requiring prescription in Thailand, which is most drugs) for personal use  if sent by regular mail and  not courier.  A prescription-only drug such as this, may be  another matter.

AFAIK, there's only one on-line pharmacy in Thailand, http://drugstorebangkok.com/shop/ - they don't have it.

It's a "prescription only" medicine, so you're very unlikely to be able to buy it outside a hospital.

Thanks for that input.

Are you saying I couldn't use a prescription at a pharmacy, only at a hospital?

I have been using this Indian pharmacy for years, very cheap if you pay with BITCOIN. Not sure if your drug is listed. I only select the registered mail option and it never gets opened and they don't place a receipt inside

Thanks, interesting.

Do you get it sent to your own name or to a Thai?

Checked, they don't stock my meds.

Thailandpharmacy.net is another site to try. Sheryl mentioned it a few weeks ago.

Dunno if they have what you need though.

Thanks. I'm using a private hospital so am paying top dollar, albeit with a membership discount. I've thought of trying at a government hospital, but that would probably involve changing doctors.

My name. Shame.. Did you check for the generic version?

Yes, but I'm still unsure I would risk buying this way to save a thousand or so.

Not for my meds. I get generic Lyrica and save 10k a month. Thaliand is off the charts for imported meds and they don't stock a generic version here.

What's really annoying is I qualify for free meds back in oz but it is ain't thailand [emoji25]

Almost invariably prescription meds are dispensed by the hospital of the prescribing doctor.  Consequently there's no demand for such meds at pharmacies.  Ergo they don't stock them.  And because they don't stock them, patients get the meds at their hospital.  It's whatever the opposite of a virtuous cycle is.

He can prescribe but as explained pharmacies would usually not have the drug and also not have any system in place for filling prescriptions. In Thailand, most doctors do their private practice out of OPD clinics located in hospitals. This plus the fact that such a large percentage of drugs do nto require prescription, is why stand-alone pharmacies seldom have a system in place for filling prescriptions nor carry prescription-only drugs.

However if a doctor does have his own separate clinic, he can directly provide medications out of it, as long as he takes the trouble to procure and dispense the drugs.
