Chinese New Year Festivities in Chiang Mai

Featured Replies

What is happening for Chinese New Year in Chiang Mai

first time to be there during that, so wondering what all goes on

Thanks

Tex

Chinese New Year in Thailand is very quiet and tame, just a few decorations in malls. You should go to neighbouring Malaysia or Hong Kong after the third day where you can see many public lion dances, firecrackers, songs, Chinese new year style food and the festive air is really there.

As noted, it's minimal here; however, there usually is a moderately small parade from Thaphae Gate to the "Chinatown" area behind Wararot Market about 9 in the morning, there usually is a stage set up at the end of one of the second streets back (sometimes with boring hiso speeches, other times with some entertainment), and there is a fair amount of decoration (red lanterns mainly) and a lot of food stalls set up in that area.  It's somewhat fun to watch the lparade (and the elongated dragons accepting donations from people and shops along the way) and to walk around the "Chinatown" area.  I'll try to attach a few photos from the parade two years ago.

Since nearly all of CM is now "China Town" I expect there may be more festivities than previous years.

Didn't really need to re-post all of that to ask that question.  As to when have they always done the things I mentioned?  Well, it's on Chinese New Year Day.....and google will assist you there.

CM authorities are not into spending money on tourist things, despite proclaiming C M is a tourist town.

They put on nothing at all for the actual new year, and it was down to individuals to gather and launch hot air lanterns.

As said, China Town should have something, and if there is anything elsewhere it will probably be at Thapae Gate.

Given the large number of Chinese tourists in C M now, there might actually be some effort put into it, but I'm not holding my breath.

I saw a poster advert for something at 700 year stadium ...

Not in Hat Yai. It's great fun there.
