Tractor Advice

Featured Replies

Someone in my wife's family wants to buy a tractor but I think they are a bit niaive so I thought it would best best to post on here as normally excellent advice is given.

Ford tractor second hand 6600 model was mentioned.

Are these any good, what are the pitfalls etc and is there any way to gauge prices for second hand ones?

With all due respect, but it's highly unlikely that anything you say will change their minds. I mean no offence to either you or your family/relatives.

We had Fords back home in Ireland and they were very reliable tractors. A Thai neighbour has a Ford 6600 as well and it's almost never in the garage - always out working. I can't say any more about tractors as I don't have the knowledge/experience.

Don't worry / concern yourself too much with their purchase decision.

Are there any websites for second hand tractor sales?

Second hand Ford 6600 are getting a bit long in the tooth ,Ford  6600 where manufactured from 1976-1984 Ford 6610 from 1982-1993, and they are all second-hand imports,so finding one that is in good condition, that has had no work done on it  not easy

We have a few Anglo-Thai tractors around here, basically  4 wd Ford 6600 built in Brazil, one is owned by our local Amphur, use it for grass cutting, mainly roadside verges, about 10 years old .

But ,we have a tractor dealer near here who will strip down an old imported Ford 6600 and Re Con it , complete with a re-spray and new stickers ,one of these would be about 400k .

Or as one guy did ,I was on his farm and he brought  an old Ford 6600 that could just about run and  really tatty  ,took it to a local  guy ,1 month later it was looking like a new tractor ,and he had the hydraulics done up, to this was 10 years ago, still going well,I think it cost him about 90k to do up ,but I would say he paid no more than 170k to buy  ,a cheap tractor .

Another guy paid 400k 15 years ago ,5-6 years ago spent 40k on the engine ,said never a problem.since

As for pitfalls non really, just a simple 4 cylinder engine ,as a Ford dealer guy said to me once,a design that has been around for 50 years , easy to fix, spears no problem.

Not seen it this year but an  old Ford 5000 was hauling 20 ton of sugarcane to our local sugar mill ,that thing is about 40years old, thay just keep going .
