Maybe it's like the old (current?) system of fighter pilots, where they'd put a star or some other mark on the side of their plane every time they had a kill (shoot-down).

That's sounds impossible. Many wouldn't have any free skin left to tattoo latest after a couple of month...

Ive forgotten, its been that long ago. Saigon had helicopters going down faster than me.
