As I understand it (confirmed by BE) I would have to go through apostilles/legalisation/Thai Embassy(London) and Ministry of Foreign affairs to get the UK marriage cert authorised and translated.

Edit: The process is here.

Correct and then after that register your foreign marriage at a Amphoe to get a Kor Ror 22 marriage registry that immigration wants.

If I apply as a parent, I imagine it will be far less hassle.

It may not be that easy especially since your are still legally married. Some offices may refuse to do one based upon being the parent of a Thai.

Any idea why they would refuse? I have been advised (by someone using the method) that their IO actually gave them the suggestion.  Less work for the IO as well compared to marriage ext

Married in UK not Thailand. Amphur want Embassy affirmation that I can marry. BE won't provide this as I am already married (to the same person!!). They only deal with single/divorced/widowers.

Applying as a parent isn’t going to help, You need to prove you’re married to or divorced from the mother of the child, making you the legal parent of the child. A birth certificate is not sufficient.

I appreciate it’s a pain, but you should get your marriage registered in Thailand. If you need more time you can get a 60 day extension to visit your child with just the Thai birth certificate and no financials.

If you need longer than that single entry visas are available from neighbouring countries using your foreign marriage certificate or child’s Thai birth certificate. That would give you 90 days on entry plus a possible 60 day extension. Afterwhich you can apply for a 1 year extension if you’ve had your marriage registered.

Thanks for the replies. Time isn't an issue. I'm just exploring possibilities as the messing about getting the UK cert affirmation is ridiculous, not to mention expensive (especially as a Notary appears to be required @ 180 quid an hour!).

A notary is not mentioned in the guidance that I posted earlier for the legalization.

It is not that hard to get done if you have somebody that can handle the mailing of the documents in the UK. The biggest problem it getting the legalization sent to you after the it is done at the Thai embassy.

The translations can be done here after every thing is done in UK.

Cheers Joe. I did work through that link but chose the 'not issued by GRO' option and a Notary was required. I will be in the UK for a month in the near future so getting a cert from GRO looks like an option. Might still check out my local IO next time I do the 90 day regarding the dependent ext.

Thanks again.

always wondered, are there financial requirements for a 1-year extension based on having a child/children? Some guy told me he had to show 800K, I found that a lot and thought the 800K was only for the retired route. THought it was 400K as with us married guys.

It is only 400K. And the money only needs to be in the bank on the day you apply (“no seasoning”).

Warning: I understand some offices, at least, are now requiring the 400k to be in the bank both when the application for the extension is submitted, and at the end of the under consideration period.

Yes you can change to a family based extension, but why do you want to apply as a parent and not a spouse?

You need two months seasoned money in bank as spouce but not as parent.

That is nothing new. And there is nothing in the new orders making it standard immigration practice.

It has always been best advice to keep the funds in the account during any under consideration period unless the office processing the application say otherwise.

Hi I’m currently in Bangkok on a visa exempt 30 days. I would like to go to Vientiane to apply for a single entry Non O visa based on thai child after this. May I know what other requirements are needed as recently I read a lot of changes at Vientiane embassy. What are the documents and requirements so that I can be prepared. Thanks in advance.

You will need to make an appointment. See: https://thaivisavientiane.com/#

You will need you child's birth certificate plus a copy and a copy of their house book registry (page 1 and the page they are shown on).
