They’re hardly serious criminals if they have to grind the hours away teaching English for downwards of 30k to cover their criminal activities. The recent “Outlaw Foreigners X-Ray” is  just going for low hanging fruit that don’t have any Puyai protection whilst at the same time making great photo and speech opportunities for the all important and lavish opening and closing ceremonies.

or maybe they are just getting rid of the scum

I Quite honestly, I can't see any normal school letting illegal, non-native speakers anywhere near the kids.

So illegal natives are ok? Or do you think  that NES math or music  teachers are better than NNES?

Did I say that?

Education in Thailand is not about education; it is about money and that partially explains why it is in the mess that it is.

With the below-par remuneration, questionable legality, insecurity and generally poor terms and conditions of most employment as a foreign teacher in Thailand, what exactly is the attraction?

International schools my arse.

Any international school worth its salt would never employ an unqualified person on a tourist visa. All international schools are externally accredited - Cfbt, BSO, etc and part of that very through and detailed accreditation process is a detailed examination of all parts of the schools inner workings.

I am sure this must be a poor translation as they are talking about language schools that have the word 'international' in their business name.

I don't know. I believe Vietnam has far better wages and working conditions for teachers than Thailand. Thailand is not the be-all and end-all or the only place to get a teaching job in S.E.Asia.

I guess the schools are doing summer camps and can't find normal teachers, but I just don't find the reports credible.  Quite honestly, I can't see any normal school letting illegal, non-native speakers anywhere near the kids.  Something a bit odd here!

I'm not convinced about either point; illegal employment nor non-native speakers.

Further, many schools / all types of schools do employ people illegally, so why aren't the school owners / directors not prosecuted for breaking the law?

Especially when they target schools to find call centre, romance scam and ATM/CC criminals.  That hardly seems correct.  Very odd indeed.

they seem too. a lot of africans working as english teachers in the sticks. really dodgy but i guess they only have to pay them 25k and that's pretty much impossible to live on so they must be up to something else

It seems that all these "Quasi" international school require is for the so called "Teacher" to be of white face and can read and utter some english.

While they 'round up' and corral the odd jetsam and flotsam of Thailand's undesirables, hundreds others coming in on a daily basis using all points

of entry into the country, plug in holes in the incoming first at the same

time clean the place from whomever is not here legally or usefully....

"Usefully"? Where are we gonna go.

Surachet said the tourist police joined hands with other police agencies to search three international schools, nine language schools, 60 normal schools and 46 other areas.

However, I do not like illegal things, but here I have to remind you, that the Thai work permit is simply a nonsense. It is valid only to a certain place a and a certain occupation. If I teach in a school and have private students, that is not covered by the work permit. Even if it is in the same town or street.  In most of the cases working in a summer camp is illegal. No school can manage the teachers work permit for short a period like this.

I am not speaking about the big, international schools, but my school has been managing my and my colleagues' visa since last October and they really work on the case. Whose fault is this? Definitely, teachers cannot blame for it.

My guess is that its mainly stupid or desperate foreign criminals who overstay their visas or enter Thailand illegally to commit crime. I'd bet that most foreign criminals do visa runs and then come back to continue their illegal activities like selling drugs on the sides of the street. And they know that when the police check their passports, their visa stamps look fine. The police should be targeting these people. Having a valid entry stamp shouldn't allow foreigners to commit crime and get away with it.
