Mass tourism is good for no one. Although, the difference with the number of tourist agencies in Europe versus Thailand, is that Europe has 50 years of experience, there are strict rules and regulations, and the  well known names are generally very serious companies. I would personally not take the risk in Thailand . 

The main problem here, is that every time the government and TAT come up with these new ideas, they totally forget that the infrastructures in Thailand will not hold up to these masses. Airports overflowing in 2 hour immigration queue s, lack of clean safe transport, filthy drains and horrendous smells, no water treatment for the coast towns, trash everywhere suffocating nature, hotels that’s do not even have licenses to operate, carnage on the roads , no road law, rip off taxis on Phuket and the islands , and thousands of bus and vans spouting pollution making it impossible to breathe. Of course, most Chinese group tours won’t give a hoot , that’s mass tourism at its worse.

Myself and wife like break from home  2/3 hour drive to a nice beach hotel we know. When my wife calls to book they will give us dates when they have a break from chinese tour groups. They do understand why we like to be their when it's eu tourists and not chinese.

The poster who spelled out the difference between Amazon and Alibaba was absolutely correct and why I refuse to buy anything Chinese unless absolutely necessary. Now, the US Government needs to do the same. The Chinese are purchasing American debt at an alarming rate and have a huge surplus of dollars to spend.  

Alibaba is basically funded by the Chinese Government and their  goal is simply to colonize the World in order to ensure that there are places for the Chinese to travel and invest and keep the public docile so the Chines Communist Party and its minions remain elite.

Thailand will get very little out of this deal-look what zero dollar tours have done- there is no trickle down.  The Thai Government is selling it's very soul to get a fast influx of more tourists  in the hope that Alibaba will expand and share its technology with the Thais.  It won't share and will gain control over Thailand's most important industries.

 

As much as I dislike Donald Trump- he is right about the Chinese- they have been keeping their markets closed; 'stealing' foreign technology; manipulating it's currency and needs to be stopped. The World needs to  stop providing higher education to the Chinese; stop allowing them to invest in critical industries; stop selling any military equipment to them and stop allowing them to purchase debt and stop buying any product made in China and force the product to be made in the country of origin of the technology. Yes- the prices will go up but that is the price that must be paid to save a countries sovereignty.

let me guess, Chiang Mai, if so I used to live there and loved the place, I moved to Hua Hin after 3 yrs.

I was back a few months ago and went to the Sunday market street by Thapai Gate, as soon as I got there I turned away as the Chinese were entering the street in droves and walking over the top of anything in there path.

What a shame I loved that relaxing Sunday stroll around.

Chiang Mai has changed a lot, not the same anymore, sadly the bus loads of Chinese are turning up in Hua Hin, storming into restaurants , dumping butts everywhere and leave with crap littered all over the tables.

 

I know the behaviour of these corrupt tours run by crooked tour operators, as I used to drive tours and was a first hand observer of the shocking way they act.

Philippines are Mexico-East, an almost failed state succumbing to crime and irrational leaders. So, Vietnam it is, I guess, although Vietnam is becoming very expensive.

I just spent 4 days in Bangkok in a 4 star hotel with the wife. Overrun with Chinese tourists....big buses etc. Very nice and polite people without exception. Many  (not all)spoke conversational English as did the French and Italians too. The Indian couples seemed nice too.

What do you define as a dangerous number of tourists?

So long as they keep to the existing main tourist areas, it will just make them more crowded.  Perhaps the novelty will wear off in a few years and they will decide it is not worth the trip, they don't plan on learning to speak Thai or want to stay here aside from the few entrepreneurial mostly young.  There is a lot to see in China still and that is where they know how to really make money.

Thailand, when you sell the digital infrastructure of your economy, you are also selling your actual economy. It'll take a few years before the entire purchase/take over is complete, but it is almost impossible to reverse once it really begins.

And I strongly suggest that Thai kids be given crash courses in Mandarin; they'll need to be able to talk with their overlords.

as far as I know from my friends at Phuket and that area. Chinese have package tours, they maximum have one dinner out. They do not like to pay to the local tourist agencies or so. I think Thais should  pay more efforts to cope with the new tourist challenge.

Just wondering where all those Chinese speaking Thai tourist guides are going to come from.

I should imagine that Alibaba will be able to come to an arrangement which allows them to use their own guides.

I think it is part of the national curriculum.

Makes sense really, when you consider that China is by far the largest and most influential country in the region.

Much the same idea as British children learning French and/or German.
