Just want to share some info about medical care in Ecuador. Health insurance is now required for expats living in Ecuador. It can be private or through their national system. It used to be expats could buy into their national system for only 70 U.S. dollars a month. (Ecuador's currency is the U.S. dollar.) But for those on retirement status they now are required to pay 17 percent of the amount claimed on their initial qualification application. The minimum requirement for that is only 800 monthly. What I'm getting at here is that for older people with preexisting conditions (difficulties with private insurance) and also lower amount pensions, Ecuador is a country that at least they could at least be assured to be covered. But if you're on a high dollar pension, then the national system premium would be very expensive as it's 17 percent of whatever. The reports I'm getting about their system is that it's good in major cities, bad in smaller towns/rural, includes many medications, and also includes dental. But they speak Spanish there …
