Poacher killed by suspected insurgents in Narathiwat

By The Nation

A poacher was shot dead with an M16 assault rifle allegedly used by Malay insurgents in Narathiwat’s Ra-ngae district in the restive deep South on Saturday morning.

Police said Thanom Suksathan, 42, a Buddhist and resident of Moo 8 village in Tambon Tanyong Limor, was shot in the head and body on a road in Moo 4 village in Tambon Bor Ngor in Ra-ngae at about 10am.

Police found three spent shells of M16 ammunitions at the scene, along with a langur monkey carcass in a fertiliser bag left near a motorcycle.

A survivor, Charan Muangmool, 43, told police that he was riding his motorcycle back from hunting at a forest behind the Moo 4 village with Thanom sitting behind him when two men came out of the forest and fired at them

Charan said a bullet hit Thanom’s body and his motorcycle fell, after which he ran for his life. Charan said one of the attackers then fired at Thanom’s head at point-blank range, before taking the two poachers’ rifles and fleeing the scene after a group of villagers rode past the spot on their motorcycles.
