CANNES, France (Reuters) - Jane Fonda, Salma Hayek and Marion Cotillard were among 82 women who made a symbolic walk up the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, in a demonstration of solidarity for women struggling for a voice in the movie industry.

 

At the first Cannes festival since the sexual abuse scandals that broke in Hollywood last year, Cate Blanchett, the head of the jury that will award the Palme d'Or, and veteran French director Agnes Varda read out a statement.

 

"As women, we all face our own unique challenges, but we stand together on these stairs today as a symbol of our determination and commitment to progress," read part of the statement.

 

The number of women taking part is the same as the number of films directed by women to have been selected to feature at Cannes in its more than seven-decade history. In the same period, 1,645 movies directed by men have had that honour.

 

The Cannes Film Festival runs from May 8 to May 19.

Sorry girls for what must seem a terrible impasse. However, have you ever considered that such entertainment recognition is based on ability, not gender. I also note that there is no mention of the lack of artistic recognition of dwarfs, bisexuals, tall people, bald people e.t.c. Stop feeling sorry for yourselves and produce a product that no-one can deny.

 

It reminds me of the Labour Party criterion of 'must have' 50% female Ministers, regardless of ability, knowledge or integrity. When does that suddenly change to include a % of small people, deaf people, blind people, non-white or non-black people. Recognition should ONLY be based on the criteria of ability, productivity and relevance.

Most of these women are privileged and wealthy so nothing to stop them producing their own films. Put their money where there mouths are ?

They're not actors. Actors are male.

 

Females who act should be called actresses. It is not sexist to do so, as the loony feminists ludicrously argue. It is a matter of common sense and avoids any confusion about the sex of the person being referred to. Hence, conductress, headmistress, princess, lioness, etc.

 

Don't take my word for it. Try asking Prince Anne.

They do.

 

But it doesn't matter how many films one produces if one cannot get distribution (cinema chains buying them for showing).

 

Without distribution there is no return for the producer.

 

And guess what?.........film festivals are where distributors go to see the "products" before they buy. 

 

They then buy them.....at the festivals.

 

It is, of course, mostly men doing the buying.

 

As the article says, 82 women, representing the 82 films made by women chosen to be shown at the Cannes Festival over the last 70 years, are protesting the disparity between that number and the number of films made by men (1,645) chosen to be shown there during the same time.

 

Because the "choosers" are mostly........men.

The world has gone to hell in a handbasket lately. Why is it that the ONLY "group" that can NOT march together are white men? Everybody else is an "activist" but let 3 white guys march to lunch and they are racists, sexists, bigots, etc.

Wasn't there another awards thing not too long ago that was dominated by male winners and the director made an off the cuff comment about the "ladies needing to step up their game..."? Has he been fired and awaiting prison yet?
